Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Natural Resources Educator - Mexico, NY in Mexico, New York

This position will serve as the 4-H Natural Resource Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Oswego County and will implement 4-H Youth Development programming for a menu of existing 4-H educational programs and activities throughout the community and at Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center. Program topics include, but are not limited to: nature, environment, energy, STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) and living sciences. This position will teach programming in group settings, both at Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center and off-site utilizing a variety of delivery methods to include, but are not limited to: field trips, tours, workshops, seminars, demonstrations, interest groups, newsletters, and internet and mass media. This position will utilize research-based, existing materials and resources in all programming efforts. This position will assist the 4-H Team Coordinator with administrative, fundraising and marketing aspects of Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center and the Oswego County 4-H Program. This position will also work closely with other Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County 4-H Youth Development Staff.

POSITION DETAILS:

This position is a full-time, non-exempt position - 100% FTE, 35 hours per week. The hourly rate for this position is $21.25. This position, based on eligibility, offers a comprehensive benefit package, to include: health and dental insurance, retirement, vacation, sick and personal leave.

POSITION INFORMATION:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education (Associate’s Degree and two (2) years of transferable program/functional experience.

  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.

  • Valid NYS Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

  • Ability to work flexible hours which will include some evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three (3) to four (4) years youth development experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize computer technologies for educational and communication purposes.

  • Demonstrated ability to relate to diverse audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, teach and evaluate informal educational programs through a variety of delivery methods to reach individuals and groups.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written and visual means.

  • Demonstrated ability to function as a team member working with volunteers and staff.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Responsibilities:

Delivery - 70%

  • Utilize established program resources and materials in program work.

  • Teach, existing traditional 4-H programming, including club programming and natural resources programming both on-site and off-site, to include, but not limited to: nature, environment, energy, living sciences, STEM, Oswego County Fair, State Fair.

  • Serve as the educator for the majority of programs provided at and by Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center as assigned by 4-H Team Coordinator.

  • Under direction and oversight of the 4-H Team Coordinator, occasionally apply established subject matter knowledge to create lesson plans as identified to deliver educational programs. Delivery methods include, but are not limited to: direct teaching, field program/tours, workshops, internet, seminars, newsletters, outreach.

  • Directly teach and participate in cross-programming efforts as appropriate.

  • Provide 4-H programming, including club programming and natural resource educational programming via mass and internet media.

  • Work to foster acceptance of 4-H programming, club programming and 4-H Natural Resource programming, methods and policies while addressing community and individual needs and considering diverse audiences.

  • Serve as subject matter resource in the area of traditional 4-H programming, club programming and 4-H Natural Resource programming to participants, staff and the general public.

  • Serve as a team member and cooperate with the entire Association and 4-H Youth Development Program staff to achieve Association program delivery goals.

  • Work with Oswego County 4-H Youth Development Staff to expand program offerings as a part of program delivery.

Evaluation - 5%

  • Implement program evaluation as designed.

  • Interact with program participants to obtain evaluation data, to include: evaluating effectiveness of classes and instructors within program areas for all programs offered.

  • Assist program leadership in the process of analyzing program data, and based on that analysis, assist in making recommendations for improvements in program offerings.

  • Communicate evaluation findings to constituents as appropriate.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Direction - 5%

  • Assist in the planning of 4-H programs and events.

  • Provide input in planning the structure of delivering educational programs via various methods.

  • Provide input to planning unit budget based on program feasibility needs and assist in identifying opportunities for 4-H fund development activities.

Management - 5%

  • Solve problems and resolve conflicts that arise in the operation of the 4-H Youth Development programming, utilizing appropriate policies and procedures and with guidance of program leadership as needed.

  • Provide low complexity administrative management of established educational program goals.

  • Give guidance to volunteers and co-workers, including those performing similar work as assigned and in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Coordination/Operation - 10%

  • Organize and coordinate activities related to 4-H Programming (i.e. Public Presentations, Oswego County Fair, State Fair, Natural Resources Programs, etc.).

  • Coordinate identified administrative aspects of 4-H Youth Development Programming to include, but not be limited to: ordering and inventory of supplies and marketing of 4-H Youth Development Programs and its Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center.

  • Coordinate, compile and organize existing program resources and program materials.

  • Effectively maintain professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication to facilitate continued programming efforts.

  • Provide moderately complex administrative tasks to support the delivery of established educational program goals.

  • Provide low complexity limited tasks to plan the educational program and implement the program budget; submit program related expense receipts in a timely manner per procedure.

  • Assist in utilizing effective marketing strategies in the promotion of programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, and multi-media efforts.

  • Coordinate fundraising efforts for the Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center.

  • This program may require the transport of program participants and/or program materials and resources, and will exercise care when utilizing any Association owned property and/or resources while performing position responsibilities.

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

  • In cooperation with 4-H Team Coordinator and/or Association Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety - Applied to all duties and functions.

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.

  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
