We are an award-winning wastewater industry leader in protecting our environment! Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES). MCES operates and maintains the wastewater collection and treatment system for the Minneapolis-St. Paul seven-county metropolitan area, which includes approximately 600 miles of regional sanitary sewers and eight regional wastewater treatment plants. How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

The Inventory Technician will receive and stock inventory using barcode equipment; and issue and deliver parts, materials, and supplies. Records receipts, and transfer of materials in Purchasing/Inventory system.

What you would do in this job

  • Receives and stocks inventory. Enters all inventory actions into purchasing/inventory system.

  • Provides superior customer service to internal business partners and external vendors.

  • Verifies packing lists and parts received against purchase orders.

  • Distributes parts and materials to main and satellite warehouses.

  • Initiates communication and paperwork processes to correct purchase order discrepancies.

  • Resolves purchase order deviations.

  • Loads and unloads vehicles of parts and materials.

  • Provides bin locations for new parts as necessary.

  • Receives used and obsolete parts from end-users for storage, disposal, or shipping.

  • Operates trucks, forklifts, electric carts, hand trucks, and other material-handling equipment.

  • Picks up, issues, and delivers repair parts, materials, and supplies to internal users including tradespeople and plant personnel.

  • Generates barcode labels for parts issues and receipts.

  • Assists with identifying parts by researching catalogs or getting information from vendors.

  • Assists in determining the status of outstanding purchase requisitions or purchase orders.

  • Accepts returns from end-users for restocking or return.

  • Prepares shipping labels and paperwork for internal shipments, vendor returns, warranty repair returns, and hazardous waste shipments.

  • Maintains perpetual inventory system through cycle counting.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

High school diploma or GEDAND five (5) years of recent warehouse experience utilizing a computerized inventory system.

OR

Associate's degree or two (2) year- technical degree in a related field with coursework in areas such as materials requirements planning (MRP), materials management, or logisticsAND three (3) years of previous warehouse experience utilizing a computerized inventory system.

OR

Bachelor's degree in a related field with coursework in areas such as materials requirements planning (MRP), materials management, or logistics,AND one (1) year of previous warehouse experience utilizing a computerized inventory system.

License: A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required. Must be willing to acquire forklift certification within six (6) months of employment.

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):

  • One (1) year or more of work experience with MS Excel, word, and outlook.

  • Six (6) months or more customer service experience.

  • Three (3) months or more forklift experience.

  • Experience working in an industrial environment.

What knowledge, skills, and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:

  • Knowledge of warehouse systems including shipping, receiving, barcoding, order fill, and stock management.

  • Knowledge of computerized purchasing and inventory systems.

  • Knowledge of electrical, pipe fitting, mechanical, automotive, and/or construction parts and materials.

  • Ability to pay attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Ability to operate materials handling equipment such as trucks, forklifts, electric carts, and hand trucks.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical information including policies/procedures, and be able to reference a part manual and use standard cross-references.

  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously, meet critical deadlines, and prioritize without direct supervision.

  • Strong numerical aptitude and accurate record-keeping skills.

  • Problem analysis and resolution skills.

  • Ability to effectively interact with others and build strong interpersonal relationships.

  • Basic to intermediate MS Office knowledge, (MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Outlook).

  • Knowledge and skill in automated inventory systems.

  • Ability to display high levels of customer service, responding promptly and thoroughly to the inquiries and needs of individuals; possesses diplomacy to handle and resolve difficult issues.

  • Understands and implements safety protocols related to the handling of hazardous and other materials.

Working Environment:

Work is performed in a warehouse office environment including frequent exposure to wet/humid conditions. Work may be occasionally performed outdoors. Work is frequently performed near moving parts or equipment and in high precarious places. The position is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The position is occasionally exposed to vibrations. The position is exposed to moderate noise. The position requires operating trucks, forklifts, electric carts, hand trucks, chain hoists, and other materials handling equipment.

Physical Requirements:

The position is required to stand for long periods and frequently walk and sit. Occasionally required to climb or balance. The position is frequently required to speak and hear and has vision requirements (close, distance, depth perception, ability to identify and distinguish color, peripheral, and ability to adjust focus). The position is required to count, read, and write. The position is required to use hands to finger, handle, grasp, or feel objects and reach with hands and arms. Must have strength, dexterity, and coordination to operate materials handling equipment and electric or manually operated pallet jacks. Regularly required to turn, twist, and bend at the waist and occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must be able to manually lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds using material-handling equipment.
