Position Overview:

This role is for a Senior System Administrator with an emphasis on operational networking services and support. This position is with a team responsible for the support of the SLAC network infrastructure that is a crucial element of the research and administration of the facility. Key activities include management of systems and system software that are integral to the networking services. Open source, home grown, and commercial tools are used to manage and monitor switches, routers, firewalls, and related networking devices. Programming is done in Python, Perl, and similar scripting languages in a Linux environment. Open source and commercial database expertise enables storage and assessment of device status and events. Under general supervision, you will administer and maintain applications, provide help to users, manage the underlying linux operating system, and request vendor support, as appropriate. You will also be responsible for planning and executing updates to the applications and ensure all systems are maintained in a secure manner. As a System Administrator you will have the opportunity to collaborate with other IT Infrastructure team members to administer existing linux-based applications, or new applications that may become the team's responsibility. You will also help to evaluate new products or technologies for deployment.

SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park, CA.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • With minimal guidance, design, install, configure, optimize, and maintain integrity of highly complex operating system platforms that are primarily used in networking support. Develop long-term strategic and capacity utilization plans.

  • Provide support and implementation of networking services such as DNS, DHCP, VPN, IP address management.

  • Design, develop, install, and maintain operating systems, utilities, and applications software on computing systems.

  • Develop and implement updates to services using Python, BASH and similar programming languages.

  • Resolve system emergencies with significant impact on the integrity of user data and systems.

  • Design, configure, implement, and maintain system security strategies, policies, and procedures.

  • Establish software/hardware standards and systems policies and procedures.

  • Engage in long-term strategic planning with regard to systems development and integration.

  • Conceptualize and implement systems within broad technical or structural frameworks.

  • Perform capacity planning for system configuration, software services, network services, load distribution, and service interrelationships among computer systems.

  • Act as a technical expert or lead for local computer system administration.

  • Act as project leader on large-scale computing projects in which strong technical, directional, and personal leadership is necessary; assign and oversee the work of other system administrators as needed.

  • Manage vendor relationships and cost effective hardware and software maintenance agreements with vendors.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Experience with complex multi-system platforms and vendors.

  • Project experience with implementation and configuration of IPv6 addressing and related services.

  • Experience in support of virtualized environments such as VMware, Azure, AWS.

  • Experience developing/implementing a business continuation and disaster recovery plan.

  • Proven ability to develop appropriate plans to meet computing needs.

  • Expert ability to program in multiple programming languages in multiple operating systems.

  • Proven ability to lead and work on large/complex system deployment projects in a team environment.

  • Advanced knowledge of security trends and best practices.

The expected pay range for this position is $148.162 - $168,602 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
