Are you a motivated and innovative network engineer with a passion for scientific research? SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a skilled Linux Networking and Security Specialist to design and manage high-performance networks and core Linux services for groundbreaking scientific projects.

SLAC is one of the world’s premier research laboratories, renowned for its groundbreaking capabilities in photon science, accelerator physics, high energy physics (HEP), and energy sciences. The Scientific Computing System (SCS) Division within the Technology Innovation Directorate (TID) provides and manages the core Scientific Computing and Data resources for SLAC, including a number of prestigious national and international projects such as the LSST-Rubin Observatory, the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) user facility, CryoEM user facilities, the LHC ATLAS detector at CERN, and accelerator controls for LCLS-II.

Your specific responsibilities will be to:

  • Design, deploy, and maintain reliable high-performance, high-throughput science networks

  • Plan and execute network scalability and lifecycle upgrades (firmware, etc)

  • Support the physical deployment of networking equipment

  • Use Ansible to automate device configuration across all networking infrastructure

  • Troubleshoot network issues by running diagnostic tests and performing repairs

  • Conduct cyber risk assessments of our environment

  • Design and implement effective security mechanisms without hindering user workflows

  • Maintain security plans that document our architectures and controls

  • Provide end-user support via our incident platforms and communication channels

  • Participate in on-call rotations as needed.

  • Build strong relationships with Central IT Networking and Security teams

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer sciences, physics, or related field and 8 years of relevant experience

  • Strong Networking and Security skill-set:

  • Switches and routers configurations, layer2, routing protocols, NAT, ACLs

  • Be familiar with network performance and monitoring tools, and eventually implement custom solutions when needed

  • DNS implementation and management

  • Load balancer technologies

  • SSH, LDAP, Kerberos, and other solutions related to access & authorization

  • Experience with Command Line Interfaces, scripting and task automation

  • Experience with logging, monitoring and alerting tools/utilities

  • Ability to create and maintain documentation

  • Ability and willingness to learn and promote technical practices and methods

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Experience with Git and Ansible

  • Experience participating in security reviews, audits and risk assessments

  • Familiarity with VXLAN and overlay networks and their implementations (e.g. Calico)

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • You are expected to reside locally and work onsite 4 days a week

  • The SLAC Shared Science Data Facility operates 24x7, in support of science experiments that operate 24x7, with users all across the world. You are expected to be available to address and resolve critical networking and security issues outside normal working hours, on a rotating basis, as needed.

  • Be able to lift heavy objects (> 40 lbs)

The expected pay range for this position is $129,000 to $157,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
