Position Overview:

The Strategic Communications & External Affairs (SC&EA) division at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks a communications professional with experience in internal communications and project management. The person in this role will develop communications to staff and stakeholders and drive the effective completion of complex and institutional-level, mission-critical communications initiatives to enhance and promote SLAC’s reputation within and outside the lab.

Reporting to the Head of Institutional Communications, the Communications Initiatives Lead will serve as the point person for a variety of institutional and cross-organizational communications initiatives, including those celebrating major scientific and operational milestones and advancing the lab’s values and mission. They will also support the day-to-day activities of the Institutional Communications team in writing and editing internal news stories, memorandums, and web content, and developing presentations, metrics and other communications as needed.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Write and edit institutional communications to various stakeholders, including news articles, all-employee memorandums, web content, presentation slides and social media.

  • Work with SC&EA teams and other departments to define objectives, requirements, and resources for communications initiatives, as well as the structure and processes for collaboration.

  • Work closely with the Institutional Communications team to ensure day-to-day deliverables are met, including the publishing of news articles, sending of newsletters, and updating of websites, providing backfill support where needed.

  • Oversee timelines and deliverables for initiatives and drive progress toward completion, ensuring open communication between collaborators as well as to various stakeholders on strategy, progress, and adjustments to ensure no surprises.

  • Delegate tasks based on team members’ areas of expertise and scope of work.

  • Leverage leadership skills, without formal authority, to influence others to complete tasks on time and of high quality.

  • Develop and refine relevant processes.

  • Ensure communications align with overarching laboratory messaging and branding.

  • Track and report key metrics that guide effective communications strategies.

  • Work closely with the head of Institutional Communications to analyze the successful completion of initiative objectives and identify areas for improvement.

  • Prepare project budgets based on scope of work and resource requirements, and track project costs, as needed.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and minimum five (5) years of experience in internal communications and a minimum of three (3) years of experience focusing on project management.

  • Excellent skills in writing, editing and in verbal and interpersonal communication.

  • Ability to think strategically and navigate organizational complexity.

  • Experience with project management, preferably for communications initiatives, and the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across organizations and with all levels of staff including senior leadership.

  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work with high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Skill in time management, organization and self-direction, and proven ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to develop and implement solutions.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Experience in writing web content and using content management systems (e.g., Drupal) to build and edit pages.

  • Experience using Trello, Google Workspace and Slack

  • Experience using Photoshop or similar graphic design program to create posters, flyers, banners, or other visuals.

The expected pay range for this position is $104,000 - $122,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
