Meta Communication Systems Engineer in Menlo Park, California

Summary:

Meta services (Instagram, Facebook, Whatsapp and others) are used by billions of people daily relying on Mobile and Fixed (including Wi-Fi) networks. At Meta, we invest to sustainably build and improve state of the art network infrastructure to connect our data centers and POPs with the rest of the Internet and to make the connectivity ecosystem more reliable and efficient. The unique challenge is to deliver the best quality of experience for consumers of Meta’s multi-media products while ensuring efficient usage of Meta’s and CSP’s network resources. As a Communications Systems Engineer, you will work closely with the Meta Network Infra team, contractors, cross-functional partners, vendors, and partners across industry to improve efficiency, reliability, and overall QoE of Meta products and services across CSP networks. The team is responsible for addressing issues across technical domains including video services, real-time communication, upcoming AR/VR experiences, cellular radio, Wi-Fi, fixed access, IP transport, fixed and mobile core, cloud services, APIs, and analytics. As a member of this team, you will develop solutions to complex communication system problems and be involved in all project phases spanning initial design, simulation and prototyping, validation and characterization, and on-going optimization based on measurements and learnings from the lab and production services. You will need to be hands-on in the lab to be successful in this role. Success ultimately results in improving the daily experience of billions of users around the world.

Required Skills:

Communication Systems Engineer Responsibilities:

  1. Define innovations and technical contributions to improve end-to-end application QoE in areas of access layer (cellular or Wi-Fi), transport layer, IP networking, and network performance optimization

  2. Understand system behavior and cross-layer dynamics to help define solution requirements and improvements

  3. Engage in bringing up, debugging and tuning the performance of products and applications in the lab and in full production

  4. Develop models of system performance and evaluate tradeoffs to optimize system performance, based on both simulated and real production data

  5. Support definition, implementation, and execution of program vision, strategy, and tactics

  6. Stay abreast of developments in the telecom domain including technology R&D, use-cases, and standards developments, and contribute to standards contributions as necessary

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  2. M.S. with minimum 2 years experience in application layer transport protocols, such as QUIC, BBR, TCP, WebRTC, and their interaction with underlying transport networks

  3. Hands-on experience in these areas with a communication system that has been in production

  4. Demonstrated experience thinking of or building new capabilities in such systems

  5. Hands-on experience in a lab environment setting up, executing, and analyzing product tests and results to debug and inform design

  6. Demonstrated experience troubleshooting complex bugs and network connectivity configuration issues across network domains

  7. Experience with Matlab, Python, C/C++, or related languages is required

  1. Experience with PHY, MAC, transport layer, or network optimization for communication networks

  2. Experience with data analysis and ML techniques to optimize network performance

  3. Knowledge of video delivery services (encoding and video compression, transcoding, adaptive bitrate selection, video quality metrics, etc.)

  4. Knowledge of real-time communication services (performance requirements, protocol stack and dynamic behavior, impact of network imperfections on application quality, etc.)

  5. Firm knowledge of content delivery networks (CDNs), network architectures, peering, and IP network layer

  6. Active involvement in standards development in related areas

Public Compensation:

$124,000/year to $191,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits
