Position Overview:
The Cryogenic Division at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Cryogenic Technical Operator Level IV to support the operation of the Cryogenic Plant (2.0K Helium Refrigeration System) that is part of the with the LCLS Superconducting Linear Accelerator. This role entails ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of SLAC¿s critical cryogenic systems. The successful candidate will serve a dynamic team dedicated to excellence in cryogenic operations, maintenance, and system development, offering opportunities to mentor colleagues and contribute to safety and innovation. The position reports to the Supervisor of Cryogenic Technical Operations in the Cryogenic Division in the Accelerator Directorate.
Working Conditions:
This role involves working with tools, heavy machinery and equipment, cryogenic systems, pressurized gas, cryogenic fluids, and electrical components in potentially hazardous environments. Noise levels may exceed 80dB. Shift work, on-call duties, and emergency response are required.
Required Skills and Core Functional Areas:
Cryoplant monitoring:
- Proficient understanding of Cryoplant operation, with solid knowledge of tools allowing Cryoplant parameters monitoring.
Electrical Systems:
Certified to work on electrical circuits up to 480V and perform electrical inspections (EEIP).
Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair electrical components, including VFDs, motors, transformers, and UPS systems.
Read and interpret electrical diagrams
Instrumentation and Control:
Plan and execute calibration or loop-check campaigns.
Proficient with multimeters, HART devices, and calibration tools.
Advanced understanding of 4-20mA/0-10V loops, sensor technologies (e.g., pressure, temperature, flow), and PID control.
Troubleshoot and repair PLC and components in instrumentation cabinets.
Mechanical Systems and Equipment:
Maintain and repair oil pumps, vacuum pumps, compressors, turbines, and cold compressors.
Conduct equipment alignments and replacements; understand compressor station operations and lubrication systems.
Execute turbine replacements,
Can perform vibration measurement and analysis.
Pressurized and Cryogenic Fluids:
Expert in pressure system safety and operation, including handling pressurized gas cylinders, flanges coupling and tubing installation.
Advanced knowledge of cryogenic safety and gas transfer operations.
Supervise LN2 tank filling and GHe Tank Filling.
Vacuum Systems and Leak Testing:
Assemble, operate, maintain, and repair vacuum systems.
Understand vacuum measurement and pump technologies.
Perform mass spectrometry helium leak detection and plan system leak tests.
Spare Parts management:
- Strategic planning and management of spare parts for Cryoplant reliability.
Tools, Vehicles, and Lifting:
Proficient with hand and power tools.
Certified to operate trucks, forklifts, boom lifts, and scissor lifts.
Develop and execute lift plans, including use of overhead cranes and hoists.
Manufacturing and Installation:
Able to plan and coordinate installation projects.
Create 2D/3D drawings for part fabrication and system modifications.
Documentation and Communication:
Maintain e-logs, summarize CryoPlant operations, and develop technical documentation.
Develop procedures, training materials, and contribute to the CryoPlant knowledge library.
Apply computer and professional communication skills with proficiency in spreadsheets, word processing, database applications, presentations, and communication apps.
Leadership and Training:
Ability to perform advanced level analysis for possible courses of action, procedures and adaptation of previous plans & methods.
Mentor and train junior technicians in technical skills and system operations.
Support & develop training programs to enhance team development.
Project Management:
Plan and execute Maintenance of sub-systems.
Plan for Spare Parts, manages Spare Parts Inventory.
Plan, budget, and execute modification or installation projects.
Propose and implement system improvements and strategic maintenance plans.
Safety and Compliance:
Promote safety by adhering to ODH, pressure, electrical, and mechanical hazard protocols.
Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and WPC procedures, including authorized work releases and LOTO CoHE.
Qualifications:
Minimum 10 years of applied experience and demonstrated knowledge in cryogenic, electrical, instrumentation and mechanical systems.
Advanced proficiency in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and maintaining electrical systems, instrumentation, and process plant components.
Demonstrated skills in optimizing electrical/instrumentation system designs, enhancing operational efficiency, and implementing procedural improvements.
Certification in advanced electrical or instrumentation practices (EEIP Inspector).
Proficiency in industry-standard software tools, including spreadsheets, word processing, and presentation applications, database applications, ensuring effective professional communication and documentation.
Advanced proficiency with test, assembly, and fabrication tools.
Experience mentoring and training junior team members.
Ability to perform all work in accordance with established safety and work planning procedures.

Please note: This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.
The expected pay range for this position is $ 57.96 (Step 1) - $ 70.04 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
