Health First Bariatric Physician Assistant in Melbourne, Florida

POSITION SUMMARY

The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed, certified, non-physician healthcare provider who effectively renders direct patient care and possesses delegated prescriptive authority, is credentialed and privileged, and whose service is billed as an independent billing provider. The Advanced Practice Provider provides medical care based upon the scope of practice as delineated by the supervising physician.

The Bariatric Physician Assistant will work closely with bariatric surgeons, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to provide high-quality care to patients undergoing weight loss surgery and related treatments. This role involves assessing patient needs, assisting in the operating room, providing pre- and post-operative care, and supporting patients throughout their weight loss journey. This role requires flexibility in working hours and the ability to be on-call as needed to ensure continuous patient care.

*Primary Accountabilities *

  1. Assesses patient status by obtaining health history through patient/family interviews and chart reviews; assessing presenting illness, risk factors, and family history, psychosocial situation, and cultural factors; and performing appropriate physical examination.
  2. Conduct comprehensive evaluations of patients seeking bariatric surgery, including medical histories, physical exams, and diagnostic testing. Collaborate with the surgical team to develop and implement individualized treatment plans. Provide pre-operative counseling and education to patients regarding the surgical process, expectations, and lifestyle changes.
  3. Orders/performs appropriate laboratory diagnostic and other screening and therapeutic tests. Seeks other information as needed, including consultation with physicians and other clinicians, for evaluation of illness. Integrates data to determine diagnosis and therapeutic plan, including identification of any health risks.
  4. Develops and implements treatment plan by prescribing/dispensing medications and/or injections in compliance with medical practice guidelines and state laws. Instructs patient/family regarding medications and treatments.
  5. Educate patients and their families on post-operative care, nutrition, exercise, and long-term weight management. Provide ongoing support and motivation to patients as they adjust to lifestyle changes and new health routines.
  6. Prepares documentation for medical records including updating patient medical chart by posting examination and test results, diagnosis, medications, and treatment in written/computerized manner
  7. Participates in peer reviews, chart reviews, staff education, clinical guideline development, and other continuing education and quality assurance activities to demonstrate compliance with standards, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  8. Acts as consultant/collaborator to clinical team on area of specialty. Complies with patient confidentiality requirements. Promotes patient advocacy.
  9. Collaborates with physicians in managing acute and long-term medical needs of patient. Provides monitoring and continuity of care between visits according to treatment plan including triaging patient calls/e-mails.
    1. Assist bariatric surgeons during bariatric and general surgery procedures, including performing necessary tasks within the scope of practice. Monitor and manage post-operative recovery, including assessing and addressing complications. Perform routine follow-up visits and evaluations to track patient progress and recovery.
    2. Communicate effectively with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated care and positive outcomes.
    3. Promptly and accurately completes charting of medical records and billable assignments adhering to policy and procedure in a timely manner
    4. Facilitates development, implementation and review of standards or practice, policies and procedures, quality outcome indicators, and other designated work projects to enhance patient care.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Masters of Science of Nursing or PA from Physician Assistant Program.
  • Licensure: Current PA license to practice in the state of Florida; DEA License.
  • Certification: Certification by the NCCPA; Must hold current AHA BLS Healthcare Provider completion card prior to start date and maintain.
  • Work Experience
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
    o Must be able to understand, speak and write English proficiently. o Must be able to work with minimal supervision in various outpatient settings; is motivated, self- directed and demonstrates initiative. o Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills. o Participation in a minimum of one professional conference and completion of a minimum of 15 continuing education units per year. o Participates and promotes public relations events
