Horizon Farm Credit Associate General Counsel in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania

Overview: Horizon Farm Credit is actively recruiting for an Associate General Counsel to join our team. The qualified candidate will work in the Mechanicsburg, PA office location. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule after 6 months of successful employment. This is a great opportunity to make a difference in agriculture and rural communities.

In this position, you will provide legal advice and support to Association management and staff including researching, drafting, and reviewing legal documents and opinions. You will provide guidance to ensure that business practices, policies, and dealings of the Association meet regulatory requirements to protect the organization from legal action.

Areas of Responsibility Include:

Legal Advice

 

  • Provides legal advice and support to lending, credit, operations, and processing staff.
  • Serves on committees and attends meetings at the direction of the General Counsel.
  • Assists the Compliance Officer with regulatory compliance issues.

Legal Research and Analysis

  • Performs legal research on assigned topics and drafts legal memos or other work products to communicate findings.
  • Analyze statutory and regulatory provisions and communicate findings.
  • Analyze the impact of proposed legislation and regulations on both the state and federal levels.

Legal Review and Drafting

  • Reviews contracts and performs analysis of provisions, proposing revisions and alternative provisions, and negotiates with counterparties to mitigate risk to the Association.
  • Reviews title opinions, title certifications, real estate descriptions, deeds, easements, subordinations, releases, real and chattel security agreements, as well as other items related to the lending operations of the Association, proposing revisions and alternative provisions and negotiates the same with counterparties to mitigate risk to the Association.
  • Drafts and reviews loan agreements as assigned.
  • Draft agreements, forms, and other documents for both internal and external use.
  • Drafts internal litigation documents and pleadings as assigned.

Lead and Support Legal Department Maturity Initiatives

  • Supports the Legal Department Maturity Initiatives by assisting in the design, development, and implementation of such initiatives at the direction of the General Counsel.
  • Complies with and champions Procedures and Directives issued by the General Counsel including those designed to implement maturity initiatives, setting an example for Association staff and management..

Training

  • Design and conduct training programs for staff and management as assigned.
  • Participate in internal and external training to develop in-house attorney skills.

Personal and Organizational Development

  • Attends and completes all Association-assigned training.
  • Completes all training required by the State Bar or similar organization of all states in which an active license is held, submitting all certificates and other evidence as required to maintain an active license to practice law.

Education

 

  • Licensed Attorney with Juris Doctorate and Bachelor's Degree.

Experience

 

  • Generally, 0-3 years of experience practicing law. Completion of Courses in law school or professional experience in Contract Law, Uniform Commercial Code, Real Estate Law, Litigation, Legal Research, and Legal Writing is required. Courses or Professional Experience in Administrative Law, Foreclosure, Bankruptcy, Consumer Law, Real Estate Finance, Negotiation, Mediation, Interviewing Skills, Intellectual Property, Federal Tax, and Client Counseling preferred.

Preferred Skills

 

  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional integ ity are essential.
  • A clean record from the Disciplinary Hearing Commission is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Rules of Professional Conduct, and adherence to such rules, is expected.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure in Pennsylvania or Maryland.
  • Strong legal research skills including Westlaw and Practical Law.
  • Experience with Legal AI Prompting is a plus.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills.
  • Able to define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Travel to/from other branch offices, associations, AgFirst, or other facilities as deemed necessary.
  • Adaptable and flexible to a changing work environment.
  • Regular, predictable, and reliable attendance is required.

Salary Range: $75,400 - $94,000, depending on previous experience
