University of Maine System Assistant Director - Blueberry Cove in ME, United States
The Assistant Camp Director position works as part of a collaborative team responsible for working together to meet program objectives, including positive participant outcomes and a welcoming experience. The Assistant Director helps to manage the day-to-day on the ground aspects of the summer, and school year programs at Blueberry Cove. Responsibilities vary by season and include staff recruitment, training, supervision, program development and delivery, risk management, serving as the “director on duty,” scheduling, and property management. This role is a leadership position that supports year-round programming. It is expected that this position demonstrates enthusiasm, cooperation, resourcefulness, inclusiveness, and creativity. This is a year round appointment. This position reports directly to the Director. The base of operations for most programs is the Blueberry Cove 4-H Camp and Learning Center, located in Tenants Harbor, Maine. Typical hiring range for this soft-money funded position is $44,507 to $47,846 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Blueberry Cove is situated on the ocean in Midcoast Maine and offers experiential education programming to diverse audiences year-round. These programs include summer camps, on-site day and overnight school programs, expeditionary learning opportunities, in-classroom outreach, after school programs, early childhood, adult education and skill building, and professional development for teachers and client groups.

Qualifications:
Required:
You have earned a Bachelor’s degree
You have a demonstrated ability to mentor staff and/or volunteers and have created cohesive and effective teams
You have a strong background in camp settings, with experience that demonstrates your understanding of camp operations and culture.
You are enthusiastic about embracing the "camp lifestyle," with a desire to work and live in a dynamic, outdoor, community-centered environment.
You have or have the ability to obtain a valid Maine driver’s license and be eligible to be authorized and approved as a university driver based on the Driver Administration Policy.
You possess effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to articulate ideas clearly and concisely
Preferred:
You hold a Bachelor's degree in the specialized fields of Outdoor Recreation Leadership, Adventure or Experiential Education, Environmental Studies, Education, or a related field; a Master’s degree in a related field is a plus.
You have experience developing and teaching risk management policies specifically for outdoor education programs.
You bring leadership experience with a background in supervision.
You have experience in youth development programming, focusing on curriculum design and instruction within a camp setting.
You hold a Wilderness First Responder (or higher) and CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification (or equivalent) or are committed to obtaining these within six months of hire.
With or without reasonable accommodation you are able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, hike 5-8 miles with a 40+ pound backpack over uneven terrain, and engage actively in both outdoor and classroom activities.
You have experience driving 12-passenger vans with loaded trailers or are willing to receive training upon hire.
You bring experience planning and delivering adult programming, including skill-building and professional development.
You have experience or certifications in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM).
You are proficient with computer programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Google Drive, and document management software.
You have experience working with diverse audiences, a strong understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and are knowledgeable about equal opportunity, affirmative action, and civil rights policies.
