Summary

CHS has an exciting opportunity at our Oil Refinery facility in McPherson, KS. We are looking for a Process Control Technician to provide instrumentation and control support to the refinery. This position will prepare designs, specifications, start-up assistance, and support for refinery instrumentation and control projects, support maintenance and operations for troubleshooting and other instrument and control needs, and oversee refinery control systems technology. You must be a detail-oriented, results-driven individual with a commitment to quality, accuracy, and the ability to organize and prioritize workloads to meet deadlines. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with a strong commitment to customer service and the ability to work in both a team environment and on self-directed tasks are necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the team to explore and implement new technology and applications that support manufacturing excellence.

  • Maintain and upgrade existing process control systems by participating in project concept, design, execution, startup, and hardware/software system upgrades.

  • Oversee and direct projects related to system (hardware, software) additions and upgrades.

  • Ensure complete documentation of key technical work on projects.

  • Evaluate project impacts on existing equipment and processes.

  • Maintain software and configuration backups on the Digital Control System (DCS) and other instrumentation systems, including Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems and other third-party systems, alarm management, and PHD systems.

  • Provide proactive communications on issues/actions, as well as long-term plans relating to DCS; and recommend upgrade solutions to systemic problems.

  • Assist with developing and modifying operating procedures and participate in operator and staff training prior to startup of hardware/software.

  • Ensure reliable system performance and maintain the integrity of human machine interfaces.

  • Conduct new control systems technology prototype tests (from P&T, vendors, etc.).

  • Ensure compliance with Process Safety Management procedures.

  • Perform liaison work with instrument and electrical contract personnel on projects.

  • Supervise work of some outside contractors.

  • Confer with maintenance department concerning new construction and maintenance where own designs are involved.

  • Work with refinery plant engineering project group on instrumentation and electrical design installation.

  • Assist with estimates to supervisor for annual budget.

  • Assist with major capital projects as required.

  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications (required)

  • High school diploma or GED

  • 2+ Years of related experience supporting distributed control systems.

Additional Qualifications

  • Degree in Engineering Technology or related field of study

  • 5+ Years of related experience supporting distributed control systems.

  • Experience with Microsoft Windows Administration and network configuration.

  • Experience troubleshooting LCN communications issues, ethernet systems, interfaces among system hardware and software systems, and performing online software upgrades.

  • Experience with Alarm Management (EEMUA 191 and ISA18.2), Operator Interface Design (EEMUA 201), system support and troubleshooting, control system design, control loop tuning, operator training, and OPC interoperability standards.

  • Knowledge and experience with safety reviews (PHA, HEMP – LOPA, IPT, etc.)
