UPMC Unit Director, Emergency Department in Mckeesport, Pennsylvania

UPMC McKeesport is looking for a Unit Director for our Emergency Department! We are seeking a dedicated and dynamic candidate to lead and manage our ED, ensuring an outstanding experience for both patients and employees. This role involves continuous improvement of patient care quality, creating a healthy workplace, and overseeing clinical, administrative, and business functions.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care & Quality: Collaborate with medical staff to monitor patient outcomes, set clinical quality priorities, and implement safety initiatives.

Staff Development: Foster a culture of continuous performance management, including staff selection, hiring, orientation, and evaluations.

Team Building: Develop productive relationships through positive communication, conflict resolution, and mentoring.

Vision & Strategy: Create and implement a shared vision for the department, involving staff and stakeholders in planning and change management.

Culture of Caring: Promote patient-centered decisions and ensure adherence to clinical standards and best practices.

Resource Management: Demonstrate fiscal responsibility in budget management and efficient use of resources.

Professional Growth: Support staff development, continuing education, and specialty certification.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and interact appropriately with patients of all ages.

  • Understand principles of growth and development over the lifespan.

  • Assess data reflective of patient status and interpret information to identify age-specific needs.

  • Provide care as described in department policies and procedures.

  • Minimum of 4 years of progressive leadership experience required; relevant clinical experience preferred.

  • Analytical ability to evaluate staff, address and improve clinical issues, and devise solutions to complex problems.

  • Leadership ability to develop staff, establish and maintain performance standards, and comply with administrative requirements.

  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills to effectively create relationships with patients, families, staff, physicians, and hospital personnel, including senior management.

  • BS/BSN required at time of hire; master’s degree/MSN required.

  • If BS degree is not in nursing, a Master’s or higher degree in Nursing is required.

  • If Master’s degree is not in nursing, a BSN is required.

  • If the master’s degree/MSN is not present at time of hire, must be enrolled in a Master’s or MSN program within one year of hire/transfer date and completed within three years of enrollment.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in practicing state.

  • National Stroke Within 6 months of hire

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Within 12 months of hire

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Within 12 months of hire

  • Comprehensive Crisis Management Class Within 60 days of hire

  • SafeServ Certification Within 6 months of hire

  • Act 235 with or without firearms within 6 months of hire

  • Child Abuse Reporting Education; Required for unlicensed staff whose position requires Act 33 clearance within 90 days of hire

  • Child Abuse Clearance Before start

  • PATCH PA Criminal Background Check Before start

  • Federal Background Check Before start

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)

  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIH)

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

  • Registered Nurse (RN)

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal

  • Act 33 with renewal

  • Act 34 with renewal

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
