A Visual Field Technician participates in delivering patient care effectively and receives and prepares patients for visual field testing. In this role, you may perform routine screening tests, such as vision and glasses checks. In addition, the Visual Field Technician performs various clerical functions.

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the delivery of patient care in an effective manner by checking visual acuity and reading current glasses prescription if applicable, recording data in patient record, entering patient information into the automated visual field machine, performing proper visual field test as indicated by ordering physician.

  • Receives and prepares patients for exams or treatment to be performed by administering dilation drops after visual field testing is completed (if indicated by ordering physician).

  • Performs various clerical functions, including ensuring that the ordering physician has signed the appropriate testing order prior to performing the test and that the charge is captured correctly after the test is completed.

  • Maintains the physical environment of exam and procedure rooms by cleaning and stocking daily, assisting and maintaining appropriate supply of medications as needed and conducting basic maintenance. Assists with ordering medical/office supplies.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Formal education or training in ophthalmology preferred.

Certifications:

  • None required.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of one year in a medical environment with direct patient care contact.

  • Prior experience in customer service may be considered as well.

  • Additional formal education or training in ophthalmology may substitute for some or all of the stated experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate medical equipment utilized to perform testing procedures.

  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time, good eye-hand coordination to perform various tests.
