Brief Statement of Duties
Brief Statement of Duties:The Department of Chemistry at Northern Michigan University is searching for an organic or bioorganic chemist. The appointment is for a three-year term position at the rank of Assistant Professor and is a campus-based position.
Teaching assignments will include lectures and labs in organic chemistry for STEM majors and lectures for a survey course of organic and biochemistry for nursing students and other health professionals. Assignments may also include other courses dependent on departmental needs or candidate's expertise. As a term faculty position, an appropriate level of departmental service is also expected.
The Department of Chemistry has nineteen full-time faculty and offers undergraduate degrees in ACS-certified chemistry, biochemistry, forensic biochemistry, and medicinal plant chemistry. Further information about the department can be found at http://www.nmu.edu/chemistry .
Minimum Qualifications
Required Education:Doctorate or equivalent terminal degree
Discipline / Degree Area:Chemistry or closely related field
Required Specialized Training/Certifications:
Required Minimum Work Experience:Prior teaching experience at the post secondary level.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Attributes Required for Satisfactory Performance of the Position Duties:Excellent oral and written communication skills, time management skills, and basic computer skills.
Commitment to undergraduate education and demonstration of excellence in teaching undergraduate students.
Excellent problem-solving skills and laboratory-diagnostic capabilities.
Ability to work well with instructional team, including but not limited to fellow instructors and laboratory assistants.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
Additional Desirable Qualifications:Teaching experience at the university level.
Previous lab teaching experience preferred.
Previous experience with common organic laboratory techniques and commonly used organic instrumentation.
Willingness to participate in departmental activities.
