2025 Big Bay Harbor of Refuge - Harbor Host Program
Purpose
To provide a positive, helpful, supportive, and informative presence at Big Bay Harbor of Refuge and uphold the Mission and Vision of Marquette County.
General Summary
Under the Harbormaster's supervision, hosts assist in the daily operation, maintenance, and upkeep of Big Bay Harbor and provide an on-site presence to facilitate positive guest experiences.
Timetables
Essential to be present during the prime boating season, June, July, August, September, through Labor Day - with an option to arrive early for the season or stay later.
Essential Functions
- Assist visitors and boaters with public relations work, including assisting harbor users regarding harbor and local points of interest, facilities, amenities, and policies and rules established by the Marquette County Board of Commissioners.
- Assist staff with boater registration, fee collection, and customer service duties.
- Perform light facilities maintenance, such as cleaning and stocking restrooms as needed.
- Perform simple grounds maintenance, including litter and garbage collection, campsite cleaning, and landscaping tasks, and inform staff of other grounds-keeping needs.
- Work with staff, providing information and recommendations to improve the park
operations and facilities.
- Assist with coordinating programming relating to invasive species boat washing and other special events or activities.
- Assist with "Green Initiatives" efforts
Physical Requirements
Ability to walk, kneel, stoop, squat, lift reasonable weight, and operate hand and power tools and equipment.
Working Conditions
Work occurs mostly outside in varying weather conditions but can also be indoors. These duties may include the potential use of power tools and equipment. Using job-related tools and equipment involves risks such as burns, cuts, bruises, scrapes, etc. Environmental exposures could include vegetation allergens, oil and petroleum products, gasses, paints and associated fumes, pesticides, and herbicides.
Compensation & Requirements
Hosts are required to provide a minimum of 20 hours a week in exchange for a full-hookup campsite. Harbor activity increases on weekends and evenings, and hosts are asked to work hours that best serve the public, notably Friday through Sunday. On-duty and off-duty hours, including additional days off, shall be mutually agreed upon by the host and Harbormaster. Hosts are required to reside in Big Bay Harbor in a recreational vehicle or trailer, except on days off. Electric, water, and sewer utilities are provided.
