job summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Controls Engineer to provide comprehensive engineering support to our manufacturing areas, including weekends as required. This role demands a high degree of initiative, teamwork, and effective communication. The Principal Controls Engineer will provide technical guidance to engineering staff, maintenance technicians, supervisors, and other team members. Key responsibilities include plant manufacturing capacity analysis, process optimization, automation, VIP identification and implementation, and process validation using lean manufacturing techniques and other problem-solving tools.

Requirements:

  • BS in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronics Engineering preferred).

  • 7-10 years' experience in a similar role.

  • Experience in a regulated industry is a plus.

  • 7-10 years of experience with Rockwell PLCs.

  • Familiarity with servo control systems (Rockwell, Yaskawa).

  • Ability to read and write electrical schematics.

  • Hands-on mechanical skill set is a plus.

  • AutoCAD drafting skills is a plus.

responsibilities:

  • Develop or assist in developing solutions for project-specific problems.

  • Participate in continuous improvement projects.

  • Collaborate with manufacturing and other functional groups on regulatory compliance issues.

  • Write, execute, and report on validation activities.

  • Design and conduct routine testing, project experiments, data analysis, and result reporting.

  • Perform engineering studies on new equipment to determine proper settings and control points, including data gathering during start-up and test batches.

  • Initiate or revise protocols and operating instructions specific to projects.

  • Conduct NCR/CAPA investigations and tasks.

  • Manage and execute change control activities related to equipment.

  • Perform work assignments within the production department, including training and technical support.

  • Serve as an SME for the service department and lead equipment/process troubleshooting efforts.

  • Interpret, execute, and recommend modifications to operating policies as needed.

  • Establish and control capital operating budgets for projects.

  • Assist in the design, installation, and start-up of new equipment and systems.

  • Perform technical troubleshooting and implement problem resolution for existing and new equipment/systems.

  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams (internal and external) on projects related to existing and new product lines.

  • Provide leadership, direction, and expertise for complex projects.

  • Drive innovation within the plant.

  • Frequently move between the office and the production floor.

  • Work in a clean room environment without daylight/windows.

  • Occasionally ascend/descend a ladder to access machinery.

Technical Software Skills Preferred:

  • PLC: Allen-Bradley Control Logix, AB500, Safety PLCs

  • HMI: Allen-Bradley

  • Communication: Understanding of TCP/IP networks, RS-232 interfaces, Profibus communication, Fieldbus, and HSSB

  • Electrical: Hands-on troubleshooting and diagnostic skills, understanding of Category 3 Safety Systems, E-Plan P8, AutoCAD, ability to read/draw schematics

  • Drives (such as servo and VFD), motion control, encoders, hydraulics, and pneumatics

  • Robotics: Fanuc, Yaskawa

  • Vision Systems: Cognex, Keyence

  • Programming (Bonus): C#, C++, VB, SQL Server

  • Education: Bachelors (required)
