Marion Utilities Lead Maintenance Technician in Marion, Indiana

Job Summary Performs a variety of routine, specialized, and highly technical maintenance functions within the Wastewater Division; This is an advanced level position responsible for the care and maintenance of physical and mechanical systems and equipment associated with wastewater treatment processes and appurtenances; The incumbent provides assistance to the Workgroup Supervisor serving as a Workgroup Leader and/or acting in the absence of the Supervisor, as assigned

Supervision Received and Exercised Works under Intermittent Supervision of the Wastewater Division Operation and Maintenance Workgroup Supervisor; Receives assignments with clearly defined objectives, priorities and deadlines; Defers to Supervisor regarding unusual situations that do not have clear objectives; Plans and carries out successive steps and resolves problems and deviations in accordance with instructions, policies, and accepted practices; Work is reviewed for technical adequacy and conformance with practice and policy

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High School Diploma or equivalent; Demonstrated strong mechanical aptitude and a minimum of 5 years of experience in advanced level maintenance position: Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the operation and maintenance of waste/wastewater treatment systems is preferred; Demonstration of an alternate equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provide the required levels of related knowledge, skill, and ability will be considered

Licensure and/or Certification Requirements Must possess a valid Indiana CDL Driver's license or ability to obtain upon residency; Certification in welding, pipefitting, or similar vocation is preferred

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates in, as well as assists in planning, organizing, and coordinating work associated with the installation and maintenance of Wastewater Treatment infrastructure, equipment, systems, and associated appurtenances;Participates with and leads others in the implementation of schedules, practices, procedures, and methods, as assigned, to ensure the continuous operation, productivity, and compliance of wastewater treatment processes; Directly, and/or through associate staff, identifies unusual issues and problems related to machinery, equipment, and infrastructure; Independently, and through consultation with Workgroup Supervisor, determines and implements corrective action, requesting and coordinating required resources accordingly; Functions as crew leader over assigned staff; Assists, and participates, in training for new-hires as well as continuing education and training for existing staff members; Assumes supervisory responsibility over maintenance activities in the absence of the OandM Workgroup Supervisor Performs a variety of skilled maintenance and repair activities such as welding and fabrication work, pipefitting and valve installation and maintenance; Is heavily involved in troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, replacing, installing, constructing, and/or rebuilding a variety of systems, machinery and equipment (i.e. pumps, blowers, motors, valves, generators, piping systems, heat exchangers, etc.); Performs preventive and corrective maintenance activities, as well as a full range of general maintenance duties including: vehicle maintenance, cleaning, painting, building and grounds maintenance, etc.; Documents and maintains records associated with maintenance and work activities
  • Operates a variety of heavy equipment, trucks requiring CDL, vehicles, forklift, tractors, and mowers; Uses, with proficiency, a variety of hand-tools, power-tools, welders, torch, and other specialty tools and equipment
  • Assists in the transport and application of bio-solids and/or process residuals in keeping with associated regulatory requirements and Utility Policy Assists with operation of treatment processes during power outages, abnormall high flow, or as otherwise required; Participates in On-Call rotation and responds to after-hours calls accordingly; Due to the nature of Wastewater Treatment Facility Maintenance, the incumbent is required to participate in after-hours emergency repairs whenever possible regardless of being On-Call; Investigates emergency situations; Determines, and takes corrective action to resolution
  • Performs in strict compliance with IOSHA safety standards, Utility Policies and Procedures, as well as applicable Federal, State, and local codes, regulations, and requirementsM
  • Maintains current knowledge of maintenance technologies, trends, techniques, and processes through ongoing training, study, and continuous education: Promotes a positive image of the Utility through interaction with fellow employees, vendors, contractors, and the general public
