Detention Deputy Job Description:
Detention Deputies working in the jail oversee inmates who have been sentenced to jail time and/ or those awaiting trial. Our job is to ensure the inmates are safe, secure and supervised. We do this by enforcing the rules and regulations of the facility.
Detention Deputy Duties and Responsibilities:
Detention Deputy responsibilities primarily revolve around the safety, security and management of inmates. These officers must make sure that inmates cannot escape, harm themselves or others and obey the rules of the jail. Specific duties for correctional officers may include, but are not limited to:
- Book and process incoming and outgoing inmates
- Maintaining order among inmates
- Overseeing inmate activities
- Making sure facilities meet safety and security requirements
- Searching for contraband
- Restraining inmates
- Escorting inmates to different locations
- Write detailed and accurate reports
Detention Deputy Requirements:
Detention Deputies must be alert, decisive, and have good judgment. You must be able to react in a calm and collected manner to emergency situations. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must have a high school diploma or high school equivalent (HSE). Must possess a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation. Ability to pass spelling and math tests. Ability to pass a background check, drug test and polygraph.
Pay:
Detention Deputies start at $40,899 a year equaling out to $19.66 an hour, $29.49 for overtime, and an additional $9.83 an hour for holidays.
Detention Corporals (Supervisors) make $43,324 a year, equaling out to $20.82 an hour, $31.24 for overtime, and an additional $10.41 an hour for holidays.
We are paid bi-weekly, and after 5 years of service, an increase in pay is eligible through our negotiated longevity pay which increases on base pay each year at .005 percent times your years of service.
Uniforms and Equipment:
All uniforms and equipment are supplied and issued at the cost of the department. There are no out-of-pocket expenses necessary, nor is there a uniform allowance. The department takes care of it for you!
Time off:
Personal Time 40 hours a year
Holiday pay: Time and a half
Vacation: After 6 months receive 40 hours, after 1 year receive 80 hours, after 5 years receive additional 8 hours for each year above 5 years of service, maxing at 240 hours.
Sick Leave: 112 hours a year, max at 336 hours.
Retirement:
All jail officers are available for the civilian PERF retirement.
QUALIFICATIONS
AGE:Must be at least 18 years of age at the time the application is filed.
EDUCATION:Must have a high school diploma or equivalency.
LICENSE:Must possess a valid drivers license at the time of hire and maintain as a term and condition of continued employment.
CHARACTER:Must be able to pass a background investigation including criminal history, driving record, drug use, employment history, military service record, and a polygraph test.
