The Role...We are looking for a talented and passionate individual to join our dynamic and experienced team as Camp Director and Operations Manager who is responsible for supporting the council’s year-round and summer day camp programs. This role provides proactive, self-directed leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality outdoor camping programs at The OVAL and Camp DeWitt. These programs are designed to meet the needs and interests of youth and adult members, as well as rental groups, while aligning with council goals and adhering to all applicable standards, including those set by the American Camp Association, New Jersey Department of Health Youth Camp Safety Project (New Jersey Youth Camp Standards), GSHNJ, GSUSA, OSHA, and federal, state, and local safety regulations.Here's What You Will Be Doing...Designs and implements year-round and summer camp programs that cater to the diverse needs and developmental stages of GSHNJ members and nonmembers. Collaborates with the Girl Experience team to plan, develop, and deliver programming.Ensures compliance with all applicable standards, including American Camp Association Standards, NJ Youth Camp Standards, GSHNJ and GSUSA guidelines, OSHA requirements, and county, state, federal regulations, and all other safety requirements.Oversees the year-round usage of camp facilities by managing client recruitment, rental scheduling, staffing, supply purchasing, and on-site group needs.Manages year-round and seasonal staff, including recruiting, screening, interviewing, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating employees. Addresses complaints and resolves issues in alignment with council policies, practices, and applicable laws.Partners with the Maintenance and Property Manager to oversee property operations and maintenance, ensuring the stewardship of resources and identifying future needs. Participates in annual property assessments and prepares short- and long-term property plans including capital projects and improvements.Collaborates across functions to achieve camper acquisition and retention goals, contributes to messaging, pursues grant opportunities, and executes funded projects.Manages camp business operations, including maintaining camper databases, staff and volunteer records, financial records, inventory, equipment logs, and site operations documentation.Maintains precise records of camper attendance, medication administration, emergency drills, and incident reports, including accidents, illnesses, and behavioral incidents.Communicates effectively with diverse audiences, including, but not limited to, youth ages 5-17, adult volunteers, coworkers, potential funders, and business partners.Proactively anticipates potential issues, obstacles, or opportunities, and develops actionable plans to achieve goals while addressing unanticipated challenges.Interprets the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) philosophy and ensures alignment with council policies, procedures, and standards.Stays up to date on GSUSA initiatives as well as national and local trends impacting youth programming.Evaluates personal skills and abilities, identifying areas for improvement or support, and accepts constructive feedback willingly.Participates in annual professional development.Promotes inclusivity by ensuring Girl Scouting is accessible to all participants and consistently delivering the message of pluralism and diversity.Analyzes market trends and community needs to develop innovative strategies for effective planning and delivery of youth programs and events.Builds and maintains relationships with individuals, businesses, community partners, GSUSA, and other stakeholders to support organizational goals and initiatives.Keeps apprised of and implements industry standards, trends, and best practices.Performs other duties as assigned. Is this you?B.A. in education, recreation, outdoor leadership, or equivalent experience and a minimum of 3 years’ managerial experience.Minimum of 5 or more years in camp administration, youth programming, or a related field.Strong knowledge of ACA standards.Proficiency in Microsoft Office and web-browsing software.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Strong leadership and team-building skills.Ability to handle emergency situations and make quick, informed decisions.Ability to quickly learn new software applications as necessary.Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and execute long-term plans. Strong facilitation and presentation skills; able to adapt content and deliver to various audiences and environments.Able to successfully manages multiple projects, balancing conflicting priorities and deadlines, with the flexibility to adapt to shifting workloads.Ability to apply budgeting principles to accurately prepare, integrate, and report on operational budgets.Meticulous attention to detail in planning, implementing, and reporting on program events.Makes timely, informed decisions, recognizing when escalation or immediate action is necessary.Demonstrates a proactive approach with a mindset focused on continuous improvement, reliability, and responsiveness.Ability to formulate short- and long-term personal and team goals, objectives, schedules, and priorities in line with GSHNJ’s overall strategic plan. Additional Eligibility QualificationsFlexibility to shift work hours as needed, including evenings and weekends.Ability to lift and manipulate up to 30 pounds of Girl Scouting products, supplies, or materials. A valid driver’s license is required if driving a council vehicle. Reliable transportation, whether the employee’s own vehicle or public transportation, is necessary for travel between council properties and throughout the entire service area as needed.Become a registered member of Girl Scouts and maintain membership for duration of employment.GSHNJ’s service area covers all of Hudson, Essex, Union, Somerset, Hunterdon, and portions of Middlesex and Warren counties. GSHNJ operates offices in Newark, Westfield, and North Branch, NJ; and maintains camp properties in Maplewood, Hillsborough, and Middleville, NJ. Employee meetings and work events may be held in any of these locations or others throughout council jurisdiction. Programming may be delivered in any community within GSHNJ’s service area, in a range of venues inside or out. Meetings with community partners may take place in their places of business.
