Responsibilities Job Description

Job Summary:

The Biomedical Equipment Technician I (BMET I) is responsible for the maintenance and repair of various electronic and biomedical equipment within the organization. They ensure the functionality and safety of medical equipment to support patient care and hospital operations. The BMET I assists users in equipment operation and promotes a safe environment for medical device use.

Job Expectations:

Equipment Maintenance & Repair:

  • Respond promptly to emergency equipment failures as requested by healthcare operations.

  • Participate in after-hours on-call duty as needed.

  • Troubleshoot and repair medical equipment as necessary.

  • Perform scheduled maintenance following established protocols.

  • Investigate and correct equipment failures before returning them to service.

  • Identify, requisition, and receive parts and supplies for equipment repair and maintenance. Return exchange parts as required.

  • Expedite equipment and parts shipments to minimize department downtime.

  • Schedule service and coordinate with vendors, monitoring their progress on site.

Documentation & Communication:

  • Communicate effectively and promptly with customers regarding completed work, equipment status, and emergency alternatives.

  • Perform incoming inspections, attach control numbers and labels, and ensure accurate database inventory entries.

  • Open and complete work orders in a timely manner.

  • Maintain records of all maintenance and repairs, including contracted service work.

  • Provide technical assistance and training to hospital staff on equipment operation and maintenance under the guidance of a senior technician.

Compliance & Safety:

  • Adhere to departmental and organizational performance standards consistently.

  • Maintain tools, test equipment, and work areas in a clean and organized manner.

  • Follow safety practices and universal precautions in all assigned tasks.

  • Report all safety incidents or near-misses to management.

  • Document all equipment failures, user errors, and maintenance activities related to patient care.

Training & Teamwork:

  • Pursue opportunities for professional and technical skill enhancement through educational opportunities.

  • Comply with hospital policies regarding behavior, professionalism, and dress codes.

  • Attend required team meetings and events.

  • Actively participate in evaluating and improving the quality and efficiency of departmental services.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

Required:

Education:

  • Two-year Associate's Degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology or relevant education and/or on-the-job experience.

Experience:

  • Entry-level position, no specific work experience required.

Preferred:

Education:

  • Two-year Associate's Degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology.

Experience:

  • Up to three years of work experience in a healthcare environment.

Additional Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of standard computer applications.

  • Familiarity with regulatory agencies and standards (e.g., CMS, TJC, FDA, OSHA).
