National Park Service Student Trainee (Recreation Fee Clerk) in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky

Summary This position is located in Mammoth Cave National Park, in the Division of Interpretation & Visitor Services. Open to the first 100 applicants or until 05/28/2024 whichever comes first. Responsibilities Temporary appointment not-to-exceed one year but may be extended each year without further competition, if you continue to meet the eligibility requirements under the Pathways Internship program and funding is available. Interns may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment. Major Duties: As a NPS Visitor Use Assistant, incumbent is responsible for collecting appropriate fees at our visitor center or campground following established accountability guidelines for handling government funds. Under guidance of a higher graded VUA performs opening and closing shift functions. You will be the frontline employee providing information to customers regarding tours, park passes, hiking trails, etc. about Mammoth Cave NP. Position requires night, weekend, and holiday work - no exceptions. Area/Duty Station Information: Position Location: Mammoth Cave National Park, Mammoth Cave, KY. Area Information: Mammoth Cave National Park is in the beautiful farm country of south-central Kentucky. Housing in the area is plentiful and reasonably priced. Medical attention is available in proximity and the major metropolitan areas of Louisville, KY and Nashville, TN are approximately a 1 1/2-hour drive from the park. The people are friendly, local, and regional culture and history are fascinating, recreational opportunities are many. The city of Bowling Green, KY is approximately 35 miles from the park with an estimated population of over 60,000. Also, the city of Glasgow, KY is approximately 19 miles from the park with an estimated population of 14,200. Please visit http://www.nps.gov/maca for area information. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. Pathways participant agreement is required. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. This position has a mixed work schedule based on the varying workload, and your work schedule is subject to change from part-time to full-time as workload dictates. The entire period served under the Intern Program counts as a trial period. You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. Employee is required to enter cave environment, which, might include tight spaces, variant temperatures, radon exposures, and cave animals including bats. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-05/28/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-4 grade level, you must possess the following: Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree. (YOU MUST INCLUDE TRANSCRIPTS) Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work. You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead. If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. This position means the individual chosen for this position will work a mixture of full-time, part-time and intermittent status throughout the year. This schedule will be discussed and decided upon on a yearly basis so the employee knows what schedule they are expected to work ahead of time for the year; for Full-time work that is 40 hours a week; 8 hours a day; for Part-Time work; it is 24-32 hours a week; 8 hours a day; Intermittent work would be for 8 hour days but is on a "as needed" basis; work will be determined by budget, staffing needs, visitation needs, programming needs…etc. An indiviudal can hold this position as long as individual selected is enrolled as a half-time student; upon graduation, full-time employment is not guaranteed. Additional Information This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate. If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Agreement which specifies the conditions of your employment as we've indicated in this job announcement. You must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of your appointment. To verify that you do, we will require proof of your continued enrollment and good standing each semester or grading period throughout your internship. Failure to do so will result in termination of your internship and employment. Physical Demands: This position requires standing for long periods of time, as well as walking, bending, and lifting of moderately heavy items. Mental stress and physical fatigue may occur due to the high volume of personal contacts and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money. If applicable, extreme physical exertion may be required while performing search and rescue or emergency response duties. Working Conditions: This position typically works at an entrance station, campground office, visitor center, and/or visitor contact station. Work is often performed in small, outdoor structures with open windows which results in exposure to extremes of temperature, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight. Park areas may be geographically located in areas of high elevation, rugged terrain, or dense populations. High levels of vehicle noise and emissions may exist during heavy visitation periods.
