Vanguard Head of Risk, Global Investment Service and Operations in Malvern, Pennsylvania

Investment and Finance Risk is a group of over 90 professionals who support a range of risk management activities across the global investment management ecosystem. In this role, you will serve as the primary risk partner for the leadership of Vanguard’s critical investment operations that work with portfolio management functions to facilitate trading, manage data, provide information on cash and securities, manage collateral, and maintain books and records for investment activities globally. You will manage a global team and work with business and risk partners across the enterprise to manage risk within regional and global business processes. You and your team will develop and apply quantitative and qualitative risk frameworks to support effective risk guidance and oversight of Vanguard’s investment and fund operations globally. In this role you will lead risk activities, work with senior management, and support governance bodies, ensuring that risk matters are considered and addressed. This role involves leading risk initiatives with broad scope, scale and complexity to guide the business through a range of risk and regulatory considerations to optimize risk management and business outcomes.
Core Responsibilities:
Serves as the key risk partner, provides risk oversight and guidance for Global Investment Service and Operations across U.S., Europe, and Australia.
Leads and works in teams to drive better business outcomes and manage risk for key business activities. Collaborates with risk partners globally to align resources, apply expertise, and develop a comprehensive view of risk across the global fund ecosystem.
Proactively guides and prioritizes risk management activities within the business. Develops risk frameworks and sets measurable goals to improve business outcomes and manage risk exposures.
Designs, implements, and leads the risk management program for Global Investment Service and Operations, applying risk management standards, tools and technologies set by Investment Management and Finance Risk.
Communicates complex matters in a digestible manner for a range of stakeholders. Maintains strong relationships with key stakeholders. Responsible for implementing a strong risk culture.
Partners with key stakeholders in regional and functional risk teams across the investment management ecosystem to establish and implement effective risk and control processes. Provides vision and leadership regarding existing and emerging risks, in alignment with strategic priorities. Effectively communicates strategies and plans to all appropriate parties.
Proactively partners with the division's leadership team to ensure business risk and control decisions are made during the design and development of technology and service or operating model changes.
Applies a strong understanding of regulatory requirements related to Vanguard’s business and develops risk assessments and recommendations.
Develops, maintains, and evolves a comprehensive program for monitoring and analyzing risks. Establishes metrics, dashboards, and reports that are distributed regularly and can be used to monitor risks, measure outcomes and propose action to manage risk within established thresholds. Reports to department leadership on risk and controls across the global processes.
Develops and maintains in-depth knowledge and awareness of the investment industry, risk management practices, and regulatory and/or policy changes. Serves as a subject matter expert on risk management discussions. Takes an active role in industry forums and remains current on issues and regulatory events affecting the division, firm, and industry.
Hires, evaluates, and supervises crew (US, EU, AUS). Provides guidance and training as necessary to develop crew. Sets performance standards, reviews performance, and makes informed compensation decisions in accordance with all applicable Human Resources policies and procedures.
Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum of eight years related work experience, with 5 years risk management experience.
Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. Graduate degree preferred.
Chartered Financial Analyst, Certified Public Accountant, Chartered Accountant, or risk certification desirable.
