POSITION PURPOSE
The Manager Fleet Operations oversees the management and strategic execution of fleet activities for Madison Gas and Electric Company (MGE). The Manager will implement and integrate a Fleet Management Information System and oversee fleet budgeting, vehicle procurement, fleet electrification efforts, vehicle maintenance activities, and other operational needs to support the Company’s service delivery.
By combining leadership, strategic vision, and a deep understanding of fleet management, the Manager Fleet Operations will lead the fleet department and play a pivotal role in operational excellence, cost efficiency, and collaboration.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Creates and manages the budget for fleet operations, identifying areas for cost savings.
Oversees and manages all vehicles and equipment used by MGE, ensuring they are properly maintained, meet safety standards, and comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
Maintains and enhances a comprehensive maintenance plan that ensures the timely repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment for operational efficiency.
Implements fleet management software to streamline operations.
Ensures the fleet is equipped and prepared to respond to emergency situations and service outages, supporting utility operations in critical times.
Oversees safety programs for drivers and ensures vehicle inspections and certifications are completed on schedule.
Maintains and analyzes records of fleet inventory, maintenance, repairs, inspections, fuel usage, and costs to recommend improvements, optimize routes, and reduce costs.
Leads a team of fleet maintenance staff and develops fleet technician training to enhance staff capabilities.
Establishes and maintains relationships with vehicle and equipment vendors, parts suppliers, and third-party service providers. Negotiates contracts and service agreements.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in business, logistics, or a related field (or equivalent experience) preferred.
Minimum of five years in fleet management, logistics, or transportation with strong experience in procurement.
A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required.
Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM) certification strongly desirable.
Knowledge and Skills
Strong knowledge of vehicle maintenance practices, safety regulations, and fleet management software.
Strong analytical skills for fleet performance, cost control, and optimization.
Proven experience leading and managing union-represented staff with a strong understanding of labor relations, collective bargaining agreements, and the ability to navigate complex workplace dynamics effectively.
Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations regarding vehicle safety, emissions, and fleet operations.
Experience in the utility industry or working with utility infrastructure.
Knowledge of electric vehicle infrastructure and green fleet initiatives.

JOB LOCATION
The position is primarily on-site, and office days are in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, where MGE is an active participant in community efforts to preserve the area's extraordinary quality of life.
