POSITION PURPOSE

Provide technical support to implement, monitor, improve, and maintain proper operation of assigned Distribution Management System (DMS) functions, Energy Management System (EMS) functions, and other Systems Operation Center (SOC) systems and interfaces to provide a high level of performance, utility, accuracy, and availability of the functions and promote reliable and economic operation of the Company's electric and gas systems.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborates and consults with technical personnel in the department and users of the EMS and DMS to enhance, modify, and support the user interface for those users. Works with visual, information, and interaction designs to improve the usability of the systems for the users. Specific components of the interface include EMS/DMS displays, data and controls, safety tags, and tabular displays

  • Designs and implements and/or modifies software applications to meet new needs and changing requirements. These applications include reports, Outage Management System (OMS) tools, interfaces to MGE business applications, and mobile applications.

  • Creates, monitors, and maintains EMS and DMS reports. Configures, monitors, supports, and maintains OMS real-time functions, Outage Call Entry client, and related tools (Outage Dashboard, Email Notification, Mobile Switch Orders, Mobile Damage Annotation, and Public Outage Map).

  • Configures, monitors, supports, and maintains OMS interfaces to the Interactive Voice Response (IVR), Automated Meter Reading (AMI), and OMS Historian systems.

  • Supports and maintains the distribution switching order application user interface and functionality.

  • Installs, configures, monitors, and maintains EMS and DMS interfaces to other systems.

  • Configures, monitors, and maintains data transfer and communication applications and interfaces.

  • Configures, monitors, and maintains EMS historical data archiving applications. Responds to requests for historical data reconstruction requests.

  • Collaborates and consults with technical personnel in the department and Company to assure consistency of information, processing, and model representations and achieve coordinated and integrated operation of the DMS, EMS, and related systems.

  • Consults with, advises, answers questions from, and educates operating, technical, and supervisory personnel who use the assigned functions or associated data to provide information and knowledge needed to properly and effectively utilize the DMS, EMS, and related systems.

  • Provides on-call support during and after business hours to rapidly address and resolve malfunctions or deficient operation of the DMS, EMS, and other critical SOC systems as needed.

  • Documents changes made to models, software, and hardware to facilitate reviewing and understanding the changes made by others and to maintain control and coordination of changes.

  • Develops and maintains a good understanding of SOC operating responsibilities and tasks (e.g., monitoring and controlling the electric and gas systems, ensuring economic and adequate energy supply, coordinating switching operations, etc.) to identify and satisfy relevant operating needs.

  • Seeks implementations that balance the time and cost required to support the DMS, EMS, and other SOC systems against operating needs in order to achieve solutions resulting in the maximum overall benefit to the Company.

  • Identifies, evaluates, and recommends new approaches, alternatives, and technologies related to SOC technology-based functions and operations to meet changing operating needs, promote increased productivity of Company personnel, and reliably provide competitively priced energy.

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Examples include responding to ad hoc data requests in a timely and accurate manner; developing, evaluating, implementing, and reviewing business recovery approaches associated with DMS, EMS, and related systems; negotiating with vendors; evaluating and procuring equipment and software; preparing budget estimates; and coordinating/overseeing departmental work assigned to technicians.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or expected graduation in 2025 in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.

  • Successful completion of courses in software development.

  • Coursework involving user interface (UI) design is desirable.

  • Successful completion of courses in power systems analysis and control or equivalent desirable.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Understanding of the operation and application of computers, software, and field equipment to perform real-time control and monitoring of electric and gas systems.

  • Good understanding of electric theory and principles.

  • Strong analytical, problem identification, and problem-solving skills.

  • Proficient user of Microsoft Windows operating systems.

  • Able to successfully complete tasks independently as well as in cooperation with others.

  • Works with moderate supervision and direction.

  • Able to prepare both written and oral presentation materials on complex matters in a simplified and easily understandable manner.

The position is hybrid, and office days are in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, where MGE is an active participant in community efforts to preserve the area's extraordinary quality of life.
