BWXT is currently seeking a R&D Engineering Lead for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA!
BWXT is People Strong, Innovation Driven - be part of BWXT’s innovation hub. BWXT’s Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new terrestrial nuclear reactors, space fission systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.
Advanced Technologies is currently seeking a R&D Engineering Lead to be part of a team assisting multiple nuclear development projects at its Advanced Technologies research and development organization in Lynchburg, VA. The lead will be responsible for identifying materials and thermal system solutions based on design requirements, evaluating the manufacturing and technology readiness (MRL/TRL) for those materials and thermal systems, and advising on sourcing, development and production pathways.

Job Description / Duties:
Lead development of first-of-a kind (FOAK) test fixtures to examine novel materials and thermal systems for nuclear applications.
Support the product development organization by identifying projects, technologies and work processes that reduce risk and improve MRL/TRL in support of space and terrestrial applications.
Lead development of FOAK processes for manufacturing new nuclear components and characterizing the impact on component requirements.
Lead development of engineering plans for novel manufacturing and testing process
Support operating procedures and technical procedures to support the transition from development to production activities.
Job Qualifications / Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physics is required.
A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience in industry or production process development is required.
Demonstrated ability to lead teams of junior engineers and technicians is required.
Must possess strong skill set in materials science, which includes the processing, structure, and performance of metallic materials.
Must have a strong background developing FOAK test fixtures with high temperature heat transfer in inert and vacuum environments.
Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to multi-task are required.
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.
Additional Desired Skillsets:
Experience leading FOAK development of test fixtures for studying heat transfer through advanced materials and systems.
Experience developing technology roadmaps and technology maturation plans.
Experience with high temperature heat pipes, thermal interface materials, bonding and brazing.
Experience with laboratory instrumentation specification, installation and operation.
Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLC) hardware and software (e.g. LabView).
Experience designing seals and mechanical interfaces for high temperature and high vacuum environments.
Experience with process control equipment.
Experience working in an NQA-1 or ISO standard quality environment.
Demonstrated proficiency utilizing CAD software, such as SolidWorks, to design custom components for FOAK test fixtures.
Hands-on attitude, willing to work independently while contributing to a broader development team.

The base salary range for this position in [[stateProvince]] at the start of employment is expected to be between $[[custsalaryMin]] and $[[custsalaryMax]] per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
