CHACP I, constructed in 1967, has undergone two major expansions—in 1974 and 1999—to enhance its cooling and heating capacities, now reaching 20,000 tons of chilled water and 500,000 pounds of steam per hour through various cooling and heating systems. The plant services 6.8 million square feet of the main campus via 7.75 miles of utility tunnels, providing not only 80psi steam for heating and humidification and 7.5 million gallons of chilled water for cooling but also limited compressed air and reverse osmosis water to select customers. Additionally, it features a Back Pressure Turbine Generator capable of producing 935 Kilowatts of electricity for internal use, a 1,500 Kilowatt Emergency Generator, and three water wells for cooling tower makeup.
