Position Description:

Create, negotiate, review, and draft contractual agreements between Texas Tech University and federal, state, private, and foreign organizations. This position is for the Office of Research Services at Texas Tech University only.

Major/Essential Functions:

  • Read, evaluate, draft, and negotiate complex legal documents in a timely manner and meet any and all applicable deadlines. These legal documents include, but are not limited to, research project award agreements, contracts, inter-agency agreements, non-disclosure agreements, material transfer agreements, and other documents. Review terms and conditions in draft contracts, requests for proposals, and funding program guidelines.

  • Identify and solve problems in the implementation and operation of sponsored projects.

  • Coordinate with internal offices regarding issues specific to sponsored projects. Specifically, coordinate with the Office of Research Commercialization regarding intellectual property issues and with the ITU Export Control Director and faculty regarding export control issues.

  • Develop familiarity with multiple online systems used by federal, state, and private agencies for the submission of proposals and management of awards. Coordinate the submission of project reports, as needed.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal and State of Texas laws and regulations related to the administration of sponsored projects. Review grant and contract documents for compatibility with institutional policies and procedures.

  • Use online search techniques to identify individuals and entities and obtain applicable contact information for research sponsors.

  • Assist and support staff in the Office of Research Services. Maintain effective and open communication with coworkers.

  • Coordinates and/or assists with other activities and special projects as requested by the Assistant Managing Director and/or the Managing Director of the Office of Research Services.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters or JD degree or four years progressively advanced experience in administering federally sponsored research in an academic setting.

  • Education beyond Bachelor’s level may substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis.

  • Certified Research Administrator (CRA).

The Research Contract Specialist supports faculty and staff by reviewing research agreements from federal, state, foundation, and industry sponsors. We are looking for someone who enjoys detail oriented/deadline-driven work, is up for learning the complexities of a wide range of sponsor guidelines and terms, and conditions, and thrives in a team-oriented environment. Research contract experience is preferred, but we welcome applications from anyone with excellent time management skills, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to draft agreements and is a great team player.

There may be an opportunity for remote work once the selected candidate demonstrates competency in essential job functions.
