Position Description:

Employees in this classification are responsible for performing technical duties in the care of research animals in addition to day-to-day maintenance of assigned animals. Employees in this classification have no delegated supervisory responsibilities but may aid the supervisor in training new employees. Work consists of both direct and indirect contact with animals. Conditions may become stressful because of animal odors. Possible exposure to zoonotic diseases, animals exposed to toxic materials, radioactive materials, bites, lacerations, etc. Conditions may become hazardous if animals become ill or are being treated with known toxic substances (i.e., carcinogens, microbial substances. etc). Weekend and holiday assignments on a rotational basis are expected.

Major/Essential Functions:

  • Provide responsible leadership in observation, husbandry, enrichment, and dietary care of research animals. Observe animal daily to ensure their health, comfort and well being. Provide daily feeding and watering of animals, including special diets when needed.

  • Maintain daily animal records. Report any abnormalities/illness to the Animal Health Technician, Facilities Manager or Veterinarian.

  • Follow species/strain specific enrichment program. Fill clean animal cages with proper amount and type of bedding, appropriate huts and enrichment and fill clean water bottles.

  • Conduct daily, weekly and other periodic maintenance of cage wash equipment including conducting and logging quality assurance test. Observe and support good health and safety practices regarding the use of chemicals and equipment.

  • Maintenance of facilities and animals housed in assigned buildings (the Animal & Food Sciences Building, the Biological Sciences Building, the Experimental Sciences Building, Experimental Sciences II, and the Human Sciences Building).

  • Conduct cleaning and sanitation of animal rooms and animal care equipment. Clean/sanitize animal research procedure labs and support spaces according to departmental SOPs and in accordance with guidelines of Animal Welfare Act and Public Health Service.

  • Conduct general cleaning and housekeeping of cage wash and service areas, including washing walls, floors, equipment, air vents, sinks, doors, door frames and feed containers.

  • Operate and maintain mechanical cage washers and bulk autoclaves in accordance with departmental SOPs to sanitize/sterilize animal caging and related equipment. Report promptly any equipment problems to supervisor or manager.

  • Inventory supplies and notify Facilities Manager when items are low or need to be ordered. Stock feed, bedding, and laboratory supplies including personnel protective equipment.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of High School or equivalent in education and directly related working experience; successful completion of a recognized course in laboratory animal science. Also six months experience as a Laboratory Animal Assistant I or the equivalent.
