Job Purpose/Overview

The Software Engineering Manager will lead a team of skilled software engineers designing, developing, and maintaining software for embedded systems and toolsets within the Antech In-House Diagnostics organization. Primary focus is on embedded software systems for new and existing analytical devices used in veterinary clinics. The Software Engineering Manager will also lead efforts on connectivity and integration with external stakeholders. Critical functions for the group are broad, ranging from on-device firmware, analytical algorithms, bi-directional connectivity, GUI design, DevOps, manufacturing tools, and support of customer-facing software. This is an exciting opportunity to join a rapidly growing, diverse technical organization designing and developing next-generation veterinary diagnostics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the embedded software development team.

  • Collaborate with technical product managers to align software development with business goals, and work with cross-functional teams to define software requirements.

  • Plan, execute, and track software development projects through the company’s Stage Gate process; oversee the entire software development lifecycle, from requirements analysis to testing and deployment.

  • Allocate resources effectively to meet project milestones and deadlines.

  • Manage risks and ensure timely resolution of technical challenges.

  • Review and approve software design documents, code, and test plans.

  • Ensure compliance with coding standards, quality system requirements and industry best practices.

  • Recruit, onboard, and retain top talent.

  • Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment.

  • Communicate project status, risks, and technical decisions to senior management and stakeholders.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or other related technical field; may substitute years of experience for degrees.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience with embedded software development.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience managing, developing, and mentoring direct employees including responsibility for interviewing, hiring, and performance reviews

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of software tools such as C/C++, Qt, Linux, containerized services (e.g., Docker), and package management tools (e.g., Nix).

  • Demonstrated knowledge of version/configuration control repositories and continuous integration systems (GitLab, AWS), and issue/defect tracking management (JIRA).

  • Skilled in project management / Agile Development / Scrum methodology.

  • Experience with security compliance standards (e.g., NIST 800-171)

  • Excellent client facing skills and the ability to work effectively with internal and external customers to define software solutions

  • Experience developing architecture strategies/definitions, requirements specifications, and design documentation.

Working Conditions

The associate is regularly required to apply manual dexterity, including hand/wrist flexibility, for computer keyboarding. The associate frequently is required to sit for extended periods of time, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The associate is frequently required to hear and speak in order to use the telephone, make presentations and communicate with people in an office environment. The associate is occasionally required to sit and stoop, bend, kneel, or crouch. The associate must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.

The associate will primarily work in a typical office environment including the use of cubicles, computers and overhead lighting. Temperature extremes will be minimal to nonexistent. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The associate will be required to use a computer, spreadsheets, data base management, email, and the Internet.

The Target Pay Range for this position is $140,000 - $180,000 annually. At Mars, pay decisions are determined using factors such as relevant job-related skills, experience, education, training and budget.
