  Position description

A post-doctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Ranmal Samarasinghe in the Department of Neurology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The Samarasinghe laboratory utilizes human stem cell derived brain organoid models to study the fundamental mechanisms underlying neural circuit development, and the impact of neurological disorders including (but not limited to) epilepsy, autism, and Alzheimer’s Disease on circuit formation and function. Our laboratory is at the forefront of utilizing advanced approaches for developing electrophysiologically competent human brain organoids that can generate complex network electrodynamics. We apply several techniques including cutting edge electrophysiological recording approaches, computational modeling, next-gen omics, and advanced imaging to interrogate developmental pathways and circuit function in our organoid models. We are particularly interested in how human pathogenic single gene variants impact circuit development and function and have a developed a pipeline for using human IPSCs from patients with these disorders to generate our organoid models. To achieve our goals, we have long-standing collaborations with leading research laboratories at UCLA and elsewhere, and trainees in our laboratory will have ample opportunities to receive mentorship and expert training from collaborators, in addition to the training within own group. Successful candidates for post-doctoral positions are expected to have a PhD degree with a strong record of publication and should be highly motivated, collaborative, and able to conduct independent research. Candidates with a strong background in stem cell biology, genetics, developmental biology, electrophysiology, or neuroscience are particularly encouraged to apply. The candidate will perform independent research based around the theme of neural circuit development and function under the direction and Dr. Samarasinghe and will be expected to write manuscripts, apply for grants, and will have the opportunity to present their work at international conferences once the work is adequately developed. These are fully funded multi-year positions.
