The University of Southern California’s (USC’s) Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) is seeking a Director of Modeling, Simulation and Training (Supervising Computer Scientist) to lead our Modeling and Simulation (M&S) and 3D geospatial research efforts. The Supervising Computer Scientist will focus on managing the existing portfolio, and assist growing it into other areas. Specifically, the incumbent will ensure the research and technical success for established programs, and help secure new sources of funding to support this and other research priorities.

The Director of Modeling and Simulation will help set and execute strategic research priorities as identified by the Department of Defense (DoD) related to the core competencies at the Institute for Creative Technologies, a US-Army University Affiliated Research Center (UARC): 1) Immersion; 2) Scenario Generation; 3) Content Creation; 4) Graphics; 5) Knowledge Integration; and 6) Evaluation. This includes facilitating transition of associated technologies and capabilities out of the research lab and into the hands of Government S&T Organizations, Program Managers, and end users. The role will direct a portfolio consisting of mission and sponsor-funded research activities and initiatives related to force modernization.

Job Accountabilities Include:

  • Direct internal research priorities and resource to align with DoD priorities and requirements

  • Facilitate and manage transition of ICT research and technologies to the DoD

  • Develops project budgets, forecasts and reports to ensure project expenditures and deliverables are on track and communicated to relevant stakeholders

  • Develop and cultivate funding sources within the DoD to obtain funding to support ICT leading-edge research

  • Routinely engage with DoD program sponsors to identify and clarify S&T gaps/challenges

  • Up to 25% travel may be required

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • 10+ years’ of experience leading medium to large DoD-funded research efforts, including ensuring programmatic, research and technical deliverables are met and communicated to Government stakeholders

  • 10+ years’ of experience leading multi-disciplinary team of computer scientists, researchers, programmers and game designers in support of sponsored research efforts

  • Proven track record of interacting with senior DoD officials, with the ability to serve as spokesperson in representing ICT research projects to funding agencies

  • Proven ability to develop and cultivate funding sources within the DoD to obtain funding to support ICT cutting-edge research

  • Experience overseeing programming for Unity game engine as well as recent hands-on programming experience in Unity

  • Experience overseeing teams to implement cloud solutions for the storage, management and distribution of large datasets

  • Experience submitting research papers and giving presentations at conferences, meetings and workshops in the fields of M&S, GEOINT, AI, etc.

  • Experience running medium to large research projects (>$1M)

  • Experience transitioning and fielding research capabilities to Governmental organizations

  • Experience with all aspects of software application development and fielding to include; Design, coding, integration, team building.

  • Demonstrated record of outstanding research and development contributions and experience in an area of computer science,

  • technical proficiency, exceptional creativity, successful collaboration with others, and independent thought.

  • Experienced in multiple software coding languages and design of efficient and effective development and prototyping of series games that have been deployed.

  • Supervisory and team building skills.

  • Extensive experience in software engineering design such as geospecific terrain simulations reconstruction.

  • Experience running medium to large research projects (>$1M)

  • Experience transitioning and fielding research capabilities to Governmental organizations

  • Must have an active SECRET clearance or be eligible to obtain and maintain a clearance. May be required up to TS/SCI*

The annual base salary range for this position is $185,000 to $211,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

This project requires travel to US DoD facilities. As such, US Citizenship and current Government clearance or ability to obtain clearance are required

Minimum Education: Doctorate, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education Minimum Experience: 7 years Minimum Field of Expertise: Advanced degree in computer science or related field such as solid state physics or microelectronics engineering.
