The Quality Engineer (QE) works under limited direction in the development, implementation, and evaluation of processes, procedures and applications contributing to the overall objective of maintaining an effective Weapon Quality Management System (WQMS) .

Applicants should possess working knowledge of quality management systems with wide-ranging experience in quality control tools and concepts. The QE applies professional concepts and Laboratory objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. The QE will frequently contribute to the development of improved processes and methods.

The QE will lead resolution of complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity and analysis of situations or data with evaluation of variable factors. Erroneous decisions or recommendations would normally result in the inability to reach crucial organizational objectives and may have a prolonged effect, as well as result in the expenditure of substantial resources. The QE is expected to exert best judgement in determining work objectives, methods and procedures needed for new assignments.

As a Requirements Management Quality Engineer you will analyze process standards and customer policy requirements to define, document and improve the Quality Management System (QMS). You will also provide consultation for process improvements in manufacturing process areas, including: requirements traceability and management, metrics documentation and analysis, quality assurance oversight, project monitoring and control, and WQMS process training. The core responsibility includes but is not limited to applying quality assurance concepts and principles across the WQMS (e.g., requirements traceability, implementing procedure analysis and improvement, communication of requirements changes, traceability of requirements, capturing requirements metrics, collaboration with peer organizations, etc.). You will provide analysis and traceability of quality processes for process improvement. You will also review and revise procedures and plans. You may need to use Lean Six Sigma yellow belt techniques to improve one or more processes or requirements.

What You Need

Minimum Requirements

  • Quality Standards: Working knowledge and experience analyzing and implementing quality assurance regulatory, contractual, and technical documents, i.e., DOE Order 414.1D, 10 CRF 830, Weapons Quality Policy (NAP-401.1), and/or NQA-1.

  • Quality Assurance: Demonstrated ability to develop, prepare, and revise procedures and plans. Working knowledge of and experience applying quality concepts and principles. Working knowledge of quality assurance and quality management system practices including the development and use of quality tools. Experience performing quality assessments, surveillances, and/or audits in most areas of manufacturing quality and facilitating internal oversight. Advanced ability to work with minimal direction to accomplish general programmatic objectives. Proven record of success leading cross-organizational teams. Advanced understanding/ability with Systems Engineering processes. Advanced knowledge of weapons manufacturing, weapons systems, or similar DOE programs. Mentoring lower level analysts/engineers. The QE will lead and coordinate activities of other personnel.

  • Customer Service: Experience and a proven record of working closely with diverse customers to define expectations and mutual responsibilities.

  • Communication: Demonstrated experience in interpersonal and communication skills, as evidenced by internal and external interactions.

Education requirements for QE 3: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, QE or Industrial Systems Engineering or a related field and 8 year of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications

  • Weapons Manufacturing: Demonstrated knowledge of quality and manufacturing principles applied in a technical, regulated environment. Knowledge of and experience in weapons systems, weapons manufacturing, production, and design operations and practices.

  • Technical Knowledge: Expert-level technical understanding of quality requirements commensurate to Quality Engineering responsibilities. Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma methodologies and continuous improvement methodologies. Knowledge of Derivative Classification (DC) or revewing official experience.

  • Certification : A recognized, relative industry certification in Six Sigma, Lean, or quality assurance such as ASQ's CQA, CQE, CMQ/OE or Six Sigma Belt certification.

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid, 2 days onsite and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
