Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Engineer 2/3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Storage Safety and Engineering team within the Operational Safety and Compliance Programs group (PSS-2) is seeking a highly organized, self-motivated and innovative engineer with a strong desire to learn. The selected candidate will support PSS-2's mission to reduce operational and programmatic risk across the Weapons Production missions through creative application of scientific and engineering principles to solve arising nuclear material storage challenges as they relate to worker safety. The team is responsible for ensuring worker safety when working with nuclear material storage containers at Los Alamos National Laboratory Plutonium Facility.

R&D Engineer 2 ($101,700 - $168,200)

  • Apply engineering experience to solve engineering challenges related to nuclear material storage containers.

  • Collaborate in a team environment to perform container related surveillance and problem solving.

  • Leverage engineering expertise to review current solutions and provide input on pathways for improvement.

  • Communicate with individuals at various levels in the organization.

  • Engage the scientific community including participation in professional societies, and presentations at conferences and meetings.

  • Lead business and technical discussions with customers to ensure needs are being addressed.

R&D Engineer 3 ($122,300 - $206,300)

  • In addition to the requirements outlined at the lower level, a R&D Engineer 3 will:

  • Deploy alongside other teams to investigate phenomena, issues, and concerns relevant to customer needs.

  • Develop scope for tasks and goals under defined project milestones and complete them in a timely manner.

  • Actively participate in team building exercises including proposal development and mentoring of students and/or postdocs.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Engineering Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in mechanical, nuclear, industrial or chemical engineering.

  • Process Improvements: Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing technical solutions to engineering problems.

  • Computer Skills: Demonstrated proficiency with business software such as: MS Office, MS Visio, MS Teams etc.

  • Teaming: Demonstrated experience in developing and fostering successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems.

  • Communication and Customer Interaction: Demonstrated customer service experience rooted in strong oral and written communication skills.

Education: A Bachelor's Degree in material science, mechanical engineering, or related engineering discipline completed and a combined education/experience of more than 4 years.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, the R&D Engineer 3 level also requires:

  • Engineering Knowledge: Thorough knowledge and experience in mechanical, nuclear, industrial, or chemical engineering principals.

  • Process Improvements: Thorough knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing technical solutions to engineering problems.

  • Technical Communication: Experience presenting briefings to stakeholders and conveying design/concepts to peers and/or management. Proficiency with writing technical procedures with attention to detail .

Education: A Master's Degree in material science, mechanical engineering, or related engineering discipline completed and a combined education/experience of more than 6 years. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Regulatory Compliance: Knowledge of industry. DOE/NNSA Complex codes, standards, and criteria to ensure developed systems and workflows can be successfully implemented.

  • Technical Experience: Demonstrated knowledge in Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA).

  • Technical Writing: Demonstrated excellence in technical writing through proposals, reports, journal publications, and conference proceedings.

  • Modelling Expertise: Experience with 3-Dimmension computer aided design software, e.g. Solidworks or Creo.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, ยง712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
