The High Explosives Science and Technology (Q-5) group is seeking an individual to provide technical support specifically in the area of design, fabrication, and assembly of components used in research and development experiments. You must provide an agile response to group member requests for machining needs, and may include the manufacture of complex parts from a variety of materials with exacting tolerances from drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions. The project portfolios that will be supported are diverse, and you must be able to effectively communicate and interact with scientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians in Q-5. You will receive on-the-job training from an experienced Journeyman Machinist and have access to a fully-equipped satellite machine shop located at TA-9. The candidate will participate in the collaborative planning of prototype designs; once finalized, they will perform the fabrication and assembly independently as well as part of a team.

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level your will work contribute to the development of new procedures and protocols. You will also recommend solutions to problems affecting project requirements.

High Explosive Science & Technology (Q-5) Group, serves the Laboratory and nation by providing the knowledge base in high explosives (HE) testing for the Nuclear Weapons Program and other national security areas. The group specializes in a broad array of energetic materials science including development (synthesis and formulation) and testing of novel explosives, pilot plant production of explosive materials, advanced manufacturing of explosives, analytical chemistry of explosives and explosives ingredients, detonation performance testing, and special security projects.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Manufacturing Experience

Experience in the design and manufacturing of parts, fixturing, and shot assemblies.

Machine Operations

Experience in the operation and maintenance of manual and CNC machining equipment. Comprehensive understanding of machining processes, tools, operations to obtain various tolerances, and performing precision measurements

Schematics

Fully proficient knowledge and ability to read and interpret engineering drawings

Communication Skills

Strong oral and written communication skills

Research & Development Skills

Demonstrated ability to problem solve R&D solutions from design to fabrication.

Prototype Manufacturing Experience

Expert knowledge and experience in prototype machining operations including CNC machining and manual machine tools.

Machine Maintenance Skills

Extensive experience in the testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems and tooling.

Software Knowledge

CAD/CAM knowledge

Research Tec 4 Education/Experience: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Research Tec 5 Education/Experience: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 7 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

• Journeyman machinist

• High explosives handler qualification

• Qualified to transport high explosives

• Experience machining of pyrophoric materials (i.e. magnesium, titanium, etc)

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
