What You Will Do

Utilities and Infrastructure (UI) is seeking a motivated, early career operator. The selected candidate will support UI by performing after hour's surveillance on LANL buildings, utility systems, including road and pathways. The primary duties include but are not limited to: response to building automation system generated alarms, coordinating call out of resources for execution of corrective maintenance, reporting suspicious activity and abnormal findings to appropriate authorities and communicating status of facilities and utilities to UI Operations Manager and the UI Duty Officer.

Serving as the primary Point-of Contact for UI after-hours, the Operator is responsible for conducting daily rounds to assigned areas and facilities, supporting Operations in monitoring Utility/Facility systems on an as-requested basis, completing rounds sheets, facility access into areas/buildings as needed, and generating/distributing daily reports for Operations awareness. This position will also assist their Operations Manager with other areas within their responsibility. The candidate selected for this role will be required to be on a rotating scheduling including day, swing and grave shift assignments.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Maintenance & Facility Operations: Basic knowledge and experience in a wide variety of facility maintenance activities including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, computing or processing systems. Ability to understand and identify work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and experience with lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.

Communication & Teamwork: Basic skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting facility equipment maintenance and operations. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Technology: Working knowledge of basic computer skills and word processors.

Education/Experience: Position requires a high school and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.

  • Working knowledge of the Laboratory's facility/operating procedures.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge with a formal conduct of operations as applied to utilities/or facility systems.

  • Ability to obtain Q clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
