Los Alamos National Laboratory Industrial Equipment Project Engineer - Engineering Technologist 1 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Prototype Fabrication (PF) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory has experience and expertise in machining, fabrication and precision dimensional inspection of critical hardware needed to support the nation's stockpile stewardship efforts.

The successful candidate will be energetic, disciplined and customer focused to develop, support and manage the execution of small and large projects within an industrial manufacturing environment. This position requires a motivated and professional individual who is capable of quickly changing focus, acting independently, can work cross-organizationally, and is comfortable with a broadly defined scope of work.

Typical projects include the installation or removal of industrial equipment like manual and CNC mills and lathes, compressed air systems, fabrication equipment and other manufacturing equipment. The successful applicant will join the Projects Team in the Prototype Fabrication Integrated Logistics & Asset Management group (PF-ILAM).

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Project Management

  • Experience in the development of project plans, managing scope, schedule, and budget, and identifying and managing project risks.

  • Ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple assignments to meet deadlines, which will require you to possess high attention to detail and strong organizational skills

Technical Knowledge

  • Understanding of technical specifications, ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and specifications to ensure proper installation and operation of equipment.

  • Ability to prepare, review and document technical information.

  • Knowledge of industrial equipment, such as manual and CNC lathes and mills.

  • Understanding of facility operations and maintenance programs, equipment and systems, including HVAC units, air compressors, fans, motors, hot water systems, chillers.

Communication

  • Advanced communication skills to effectively collaborate with engineers, maintenance technicians, machinists, vendors, craft people and installers to ensure efficient completion of installation projects.

  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, and written skills; demonstrated by relationships built, briefings, and presentations.

Education/Experience:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with the utilization of software to support the planning and execution of assigned projects.

  • Experience with CAD software, preferably CREO or SolidWorks.

  • Experience coordinating with outside vendors to support remote and onsite work.

  • Experience with executing projects within a hazardous material environment.

  • Experience with being a Technical and Quality Subject Matter Expert.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
