Los Alamos National Laboratory Industrial Engineer (R&D Engineer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2/ R&D Engineer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

R&D Engineer 2 ($101,700 - $168,200)

Be part of an amazing engineering team here at the nation's Plutonium Center of Excellence that supports our Nation's nuclear deterrent. As an Industrial Engineer you will be providing technical expertise and leadership in the design and development of process and quality improvement programs for the plutonium facility. Being a hands-on Industrial Engineer with project leadership and problem-solving skills to work in our collaborative team environment, you will conduct time studies, develop and implement work standards and participate on new product development teams. Your work will directly support the execution of manufacturing of weapon components, the surveillance of weapon components and materials in the nuclear stockpile, and other national security missions.

R&D Engineer 3 ($122,300 - 206,300)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level as an R&D Engineer 3, applies and interprets, on a broad basis, specialized, state-of-the-art engineering and scientific principles, techniques, methods, and tools to provide solutions for an extensive and diverse range of complex and/or ambiguous problems where analysis of situations or date requires in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Leads the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of novel engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D initiatives. Develops innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems. May contribute to the development of industry standards. Develops new technical capabilities and creates opportunities to extend R&D engineering through the expansion of existing efforts. Leads the development of technical products such as journal papers, reports, presentations, and concept papers. Influences organizational, project, and program strategies and directions. Leads technical decision-making at task level within a project. Makes decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives. Contributes to developments in industry and develops new skills consistent with state-of-the-art. May attain additional certifications, qualifications, and/or recognition to grow in the field.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and experience in an engineering discipline such as designing, planning, and executing problem solving and process improvement projects

  • Experience working with members from various process teams in a collaborative manner to collect data, make specific suggestions to collect and analyze data

  • Perform cost-benefit-risk analysis/return on investment analysis

  • Recommend changes to processes based on the results of the analyses

  • Define post-implementation monitoring and benefits and help implement the changes. You will be encouraged to be a champion of the change and make presentations to the team and the upper management at various points of the change study.

  • Work in a team environment where you will be expected to work with various process teams whose members would have varied levels of experience and expertise with the subject matter.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Lead teams using a problem-solving methodology approach to solve problems identified by internal/external SMEs (Lean/Lean Six Sigma and process improvement projects)

  • Develop innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems.

  • Influence organizational, project, and program strategies and directions.

  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing with diverse employees and organizations at all levels.

  • Have strong interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrate ability to work and influence cross- functionally.

  • Leads development of technical section of small to moderate proposals and actively mentors, coaches, and trains junior staff.

  • Provide solutions to complex IE problems involving a combination of labor, space, and technological changes under multiple constraints arising from resource availability, safety and regulatory requirements.

Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 2 level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 3 level: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

DOE Order 426.2: Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or related science, 2 years job related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong leadership skills

  • Lean, Six Sigma, and/or Lean Six Sigma certification from an accredited source (Green or Black Belt).

  • Have knowledge/certification in lean manufacturing principles, statistical process control techniques, and Six Sigma methodologies are highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing, safety, and quality requirements.

  • Experience in process improvement, process engineering, or industrial engineering.

  • Experience using MicroStrategy, Spider Strategies or other data visualization tools

  • Experience with Data Management, Data Cataloging, Database understanding

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis.

  • Championing changes the project teams recommend, meaning work with process teams and upper management to plan, schedule, and oversee the implementation of recommended changes.

  • Experience in data mining, data manipulation, and data analysis.

  • Certification and/or experience in change management techniques.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Conduct of Operations in a nuclear or radiological facility.

  • Existing DOE "Q" clearance (or similar).

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, ยง712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
