Los Alamos National Laboratory High-Purity Radioactive Wastewater Treatment Engineer (R&D Engineer 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

As a member of the Chemistry & Waste Facilities Radioactive Liquid Waste Operations Team, the R&D Engineer 3 will be responsible for providing support in radioactive wastewater processing to the CWF-RLW Operations Manager.

Safety and security are primary responsibilities for all Laboratory employees. Leads the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of novel engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D initiatives pertaining to treatment of radioactive wastewater and management of secondary wastes. Develops innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems. May contribute to the development of industry standards. Develops new technical capabilities and creates opportunities to extend R&D engineering through the expansion of existing efforts.

Leads the development of technical products such as internal LANL reports, regulatory reports to state and federal regulators, presentations, and conceptual design papers, and journal papers. Develops intellectual property leading to publications, copyrights, and/or patents. May contribute to technology transfer. Influences organizational, project, and program strategies and directions. Leads technical decision-making at task level within a project. Makes decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives. Uses project assignments to further organizational goals. Develops and implements project management plans, including scope, schedule, and budget, for small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks. Defines deliverables at the project or major task level. Mentors junior staff and peers in technical and professional growth. This demanding position involves the ability to manage multiple tasks in an environment of rapidly changing priorities.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge and experience with water or wastewater treatment systems such as pH adjustment, coagulant/polymer addition, media filtration, microfiltration, reverse osmosis units, fluid conveyance equipment, ion exchange, evaporation technologies and solid & liquid secondary waste handling and disposal.

  • Thorough knowledge /experience with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) (Clean Water Act Section 402, 40 CRF 122) permit application preparation, requirements and compliance.

  • Thorough knowledge / experience with the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) Discharge Permit, DP-1132, for the Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility.

  • Through knowledge of and experience in procedure development and training.

  • Through knowledge of design and operation of water or wastewater treatment systems.

  • Strong interpersonal skills in both verbal and written communications and the ability to effectively communicate to all levels of staff and management.

  • Thorough knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing water or wastewater treatment systems.

  • Through knowledge of and experience in implementing policies affecting research and development.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

DOE Order 426.2: Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or related science, 2 years job related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in scheduling and overseeing water or wastewater production activities.

  • Familiarization with Conduct of Operations.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
