Los Alamos National Laboratory Forest Health Undergraduate Student in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at the Undergraduate level. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at a higher level.
The selected candidate will work with Forest Health program staff within the Environmental Protection and Compliance Division to support monitoring of wildland fire mitigation, forest thinning, and forest health projects across the Laboratory's approximately 40 square miles. The position includes collaboration with biologists, earth and environmental sciences researchers, and other environmental compliance staff. In addition to forest inventory and understory vegetation monitoring, the position may include urban forestry inventory and monitoring, as well as GPS data collection and map making using GIS.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
• Experience with general ecological/forestry field work, including standard forest inventory and vegetation monitoring methods and photo monitoring
• Working knowledge of GPS units and data management
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written
• Ability and desire to work a full day outdoors
• Provide documentation of acceptance into an undergraduate program.
• Enroll in and successfully complete a minimum of 12 undergraduate credit hours per semester (or the equivalent of full time enrollment).
• Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on 4.0 scale.
Education/Experience: Current undergraduate student in environmental sciences, range sciences, ecology, landscape ecology, forestry, fire ecology, natural resources management or related field.
Desired Qualifications:
Familiarity with GIS for map production and use, and understanding of mobile GIS data collection such as Avenza maps, ArcGIS Survey 123 or FieldMaps
Experience with forestry field techniques, vegetation or fuels monitoring
Strong writing skills and experience preparing plans and reports
Natural inclination for collaboration, ability to juggle multiple projects under limited direction, provide customer service, and communicate well through verbal and written communication
Familiarity with sustainable roads and trails or erosion control best management practices
Plant identification skills and familiarity with southwestern US species

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
