What You Will Do

Detonator Production Division is the premier Production Agency (PA) assigned to produce WR (War Reserve) detonators for the Nation's nuclear stockpile security mission. The division is part of LANL's Weapons Production Directorate. DP is comprised of a team of motivated, highly skilled technical and operational support staff working in an integrated format. The organization is centered on high-rigor manufacturing operations to produce precision, safe and reliable WR products. DP partners closely with customers and stakeholders such as NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration), Design Agencies (LANL, Sandia, and Livermore), and LANL program management orgs to deliver on challenging National security objectives. DP upholds vigorous teamwork, personal integrity, respectful workplace, and continuous improvement in operations, technical excellence, safety and security.

The successful candidate will lead a team of designers/drafters and junior engineers within Detonator Production. The candidate will have advanced or expert experience and skills using 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce models, drawings, layouts and engineering concepts. The successful candidate will also lead, mentor and guide junior designers and engineers in all areas related to drawing definition. They will generate complete design packages for complex components, assemblies, tooling, equipment and/or systems and resolve design package issues by facilitating design reviews, collaborating with other drafters/designers, engineers, and stakeholders on hardware design, fabrication, assembly and testing.

The candidate will have advanced or expert knowledge of drawing definition, drawing requirements, and configuration management of part and assembly definition. This includes knowledge of industry standards such as American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y series design/drafting standards including Y14.5M Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) as related to the design field. Shall have the ability to perform calculations in support of unique technical problems for form, fit and function and to mentor lower-level designers in ASME Y14.5 or Laboratory drafting manual. They will perform drawing checks, provide feedback and help management drive consistency in Detonator Production (DP) models and drawings.

Additional work scope includes, but is not limited to:

Ensuring safety and security compliance, maintaining required training, adhering to laboratory policies, programs, procedures and practices. Collaboration with other engineers, drafters/designers, quality engineers, and production technicians.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Technologist 1:

Technical - Proven experience in designing complex components or assemblies. Can effectively apply engineering first principles to design components, tooling, fixtures, and gauges that meet design requirements and criteria. Can apply industry standards to design packages to meet intended requirements.

Leadership - Ability to provide leadership to designers and drafters.

Communication - Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with all levels of the department.

Interpretation of Drawings - Advanced level proficiency in interpreting and translating complex design agency specifications and engineering drawings.

Engineering Technologist 2:

Technical - Advanced experience in designing complex components or assemblies. Can effectively apply engineering first principles to design components, tooling, fixtures, and gauges that meet design requirements and criteria. Can apply industry standards to design packages to meet intended requirements.

Leadership - Demonstrated ability to provide leadership to designers and drafters.

Communication - Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with all levels of the department.

Interpretation of Drawings - Expert level proficiency in interpreting and translating complex design agency specifications and engineering drawings.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, science, math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Weapons - Knowledge of the United States nuclear weapons programs, designs, and engineering.

Specific Skills- Advanced/Expert level working knowledge of ASME Y14.5, Dimensioning and Tolerances. Advanced/Expert level proficiency with direct or parametric engineering modeling software (e.g., CREO, SolidWorks, ANSYS, and AutoCAD) and associated Product Data Management system(s) (PDMLink). Advanced/Expert level understanding of manufacturing techniques like metal joining (soldering, welding, etc.), milling, turning, drilling, etc.

Clearance - Active, ability to reinstate, or ability to obtain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance.

Location: This position will be on-site in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is a 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
