Los Alamos National Laboratory Data Science Integration, Automation, and Accessibility Scientist (Scientist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) invites outstanding candidates for a data scientist position. CINT is a national user facility funded by the DOE Office of Science to provide research capabilities in nanoscience and nanointegration to a worldwide community of users. CINT is organized around four Science Thrusts: In-Situ Characterization and Nanomechanics (ICNM); Nanophotonics and Optical Nanomaterials (NPON); Quantum Materials Systems (QMS); and Soft, Biological and Composite Nanomaterials (SBCN). CINT fosters high-impact research supported by expertise spanning synthesis/fabrication, characterization, and theory/modeling. Its staff members aim to advance both scientific knowledge and next-generation technique development. The selected scientist will be a member of CINT's ICNM thrust and will interface with user projects in all four scientific thrusts and LANL's Electron Microscopy Laboratory (EML). Additional information on the user facility is available at https://cint.lanl.gov.

Important criteria for the successful staff member will be:

  • innovating automation of experimental dataset transfer to/from open databases,

  • transforming the operation mode of existing complex instruments to enable remote usage, and

  • introducing new file formats to make proprietary datatypes openly accessible to users.

The selectee will be responsible for developing portable and accessible workflows for users requiring access to large, complex datasets that include:

  • Scanning/transmission electron microscopy

  • In-situ movies

  • Optical spectroscopy

  • Electrical/thermal transport

  • Mechanical testing profiles

  • X-ray analysis

Using large data computational algorithms and AI, the scientist will collaborate with other CINT Staff and CINT Users to perform cutting-edge integrated theory/experiment/computation projects. Contributes to the development of intellectual breakthroughs leading to journal papers, copyrights and/or patents, technical reports, proposals, etc. Communicates results through appropriate channels. At the PhD level, the candidate will also develop and maintain an independent research program. This new staff member should have a strong background in data science, open-source software creation, and automation. Taken together, the position requires both independence and collaboration in a team-oriented environment combining experimentalists and theorists with an emphasis on exceptional user support. Support will be at either 0.50 FTE or 1.00 FTE depending on circumstances.
