Los Alamos National Laboratory Building Automation System Engineering Technologist 2/3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services (ES) Division as a Building Automation System (BAS) Engineering Technologist. As a vital member of the ES-DO team you will contribute to the implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of facilities engineering projects. As a BAS Engineering Technologist you will generate designs and support construction and commissioning of BAS and mechanical systems. This position will be filled at the BAS Engineering Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
BAS Engineering Technologist 2 ($90,000-$147,100)
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties that include, but are not limited to:
Provide reliable, energy-efficient engineering design and field support, for BAS used in the daily operations and control of facility HVAC at LANL
Write and modify control sequences, monitor and troubleshoot systems to optimize building equipment operation, energy utilization, indoor air quality and comfort
Assist HVAC field and maintenance technicians in the installation, repair, replacement and testing of various components or systems. Provide advanced troubleshooting of comfort, energy, indoor air quality, and safety concerns related to HVAC systems and controls
Work with Project Management, Construction, outside contractors, consultants, and controls vendors to install, network, import controls and sensor data points into the fault detection and diagnostics (SkySpark) software platform for control systems and perform field device and sequence commissioning
Remain current with state of the art hardware, software, and technology
BAS Engineering Technologist 3 ($99,200-$164,100)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the candidate will also be expected to:
Investigate and recommend innovative engineering, maintenance, and techniques to improve system operations, maintenance, efficiency and security
Contribute to the development of standards and improved workflows within ES
Perform design review and provide input on new building automation controls projects that include laboratories, offices, and mixed uses
Design and develop dashboards for BAS Engineering and its customers. This will require learning the AXON programming language used in SkySpark
Perform advanced data and statistical analysis
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrative knowledge in at least one of the following building automation systems: Trane, Automated Logic, Alerton, Johnson Controls, Siemens or Niagra AX
Experience with Microsoft Office, including the demonstrated ability to independently interpret data and information to produce and analyze data to generate professional publishable reports
Demonstrative experience in various types of programming languages (e.g. JAVA, Python, MatLab, etc.), both line and block (graphical)
General understating of IP networks
A working knowledge of typical metrics and formulas used for building energy calculations. High proficiency with personal computers. Proficient in reading wiring diagrams
Demonstrative knowledge of engineering principles and procedures, guides, appropriate standards, administrative practices and application of technology aided engineering tools
Additional Job Requirements for BAS Engineering Technologist 3:
Certification or demonstrated proficiency in at least two or more of the following building automation systems: Trane, Automated Logic, Alerton, Johnson Controls, Siemens or Niagra AX
Advanced working experience with related industry codes/standards
Education/Experience at BAS Engineering Technologist 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at BAS Engineering Technologist 3: Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience with industrial control systems, and metering devices, and remote monitoring
Knowledge of information technology architecture and communications networks for industrial control systems, including familiarity with BACnet, LonWorks, Modbus, MSTP, ARCNET protocols
Experience either with energy and HVAC audits or commissioning work
CEM or LEED certification
Experience with Test and Balance
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
