Phlebotomy Technicians are integral members of the medical laboratory team whose primary function is the collection of blood samples from patients. Phlebotomy Technicians also facilitate the collection and transportation of other laboratory specimens (e.g. urine). Very often the patient's only contact with the medical laboratory is with the Phlebotomy Technician. Many patients, from children and teens to adults, often find needles and the idea of having their blood drawn frightening. It takes a skilled Phlebotomy Technician to put the patient at ease while obtaining all the required specimens.

A caregiver in this position works 6:30am - 5:30pm and floats to multiple locations.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Perform blood collection procedures and related tasks.

  • Verify order requests and identifying information prior to drawing blood or collecting the specimen/kit to be tested by analytical staff.

  • Label all specimens collected and deliver them to the appropriate processing area.

  • Follow venipuncture procedures and maintain appropriate log sheets.

  • Greet patients warmly when they present to outpatient lab desks or when entering a patient's room and complete test request entry and specimen receipt using lab computer.

  • Perform specimen processing and send out tasks including accessioning, centrifugation, and packaging for transport when necessary for all specimen types.

  • Pick up and deliver blood, other sample types and lab supplies to appropriate areas.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Technical proficiency with standard procedures, techniques and common practices.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Formal phlebotomy certification.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires frequent and long durations of standing and walking.

  • Visual acuity including the ability to distinguish colors.

  • Manual dexterity sufficient to manipulate blood drawing equipment and make measurements.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
