DESCRIPTION

The Long Beach Fire Department is accepting applications for Lifeguard (Non-Career) (Seasonal Ocean Lifeguard). Applicants are encouraged to apply before March 15, 2025. Interested applicants should be available for the Lifeguard Tryoutsscheduled forSunday March 16, 2025 at 2100 E Ocean Blvd., 90803. Interested applicants who are unable to complete the application prior to March 15, 2025 will have an opportunity to complete the application in person prior to the Tryouts and should arrive promptly at 8:00 AM for assistance.

Mission:

The mission of the Fire Department is to protect lives, property and the environment, improving the quality of life and safety of the community.

Core Services:

• Deliver fire, rescue, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, and nonemergency response services

• Provide fire prevention services through fire code enforcement, arson investigation, environmental safeguards, and community outreach programming

• Provide training and education essential to the delivery of core fire and rescue services

The Department

In alignment with the City’s Strategic Vision 2030, the Fire Department’s mission supports the improvement of community wellness through reduction and mitigation of dangerous or life-threatening situations. The Fire Department’s mission is carried out through programs, services and policies designed to encourage genuine and impactful community involvement, leadership and collaborative efforts. The unique function of the Fire Department is to save lives and protect community resources from the dangers and impacts of fires and other emergencies. The Fire Department’s frontline sworn fire personnel and professional administrative staff work together in a dedicated fashion to ensure the department responds swiftly and effectively to various incidents, including fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, natural disasters, and rescue operations.

Key services include fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue operations, hazardous materials response, community engagement and education, fire prevention and disaster response. The Fire Department is proud to work collaboratively, often in high-stress situations, to fulfill the mission of safeguarding lives, protecting property, and ensuring public safety. The dedication of the Fire Department team demonstrates their loyalty, bravery, and commitment to serving the community, making them essential pillars of the emergency response system that serves the Long Beach community.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Warns bathers of water hazards;

  • Performs rescues;

  • Enforces beach safety and conduct regulations;

  • Renders first aid including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR);

  • Assists the public by answering questions and providing information;

  • Takes charge of lost children;

  • Maintains beach safety and rescue equipment;

  • Required to attend a 90 hour training program;

  • Performs other related duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

Interested applicants should complete one application prior to the scheduled Tryouts. If an application is not completed in advance, candidates will be required to complete one in person prior to scheduled Tryouts. Check in and application submissions will be at Lifeguard Beach Operations located at 2100 E Ocean Boulevard. All candidates should arrive at 8:00 AM for check in or to complete the application.

  • No prior training or experience is required

  • 17 years of age as of July 1st, 2025 – Proof of age required at time of conditional employment offer (valid DMV issued

Driver's License/Identification Card, U.S. Passport/Passport Card, or current school ID).

  • Any applicant under 18 years of age must possess a valid work permit from his or her high school, high school diploma,

or G.E.D. prior to the start of the training program.

  • Full-time summer commitment required

SELECTION PROCEDURE

This recruitment will close at 9:00 AM Pacific Time on March 16, 2025.Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements, including submission of all required attachments, will not be considered.

To be considered, applicants must successfully pass the lifeguard tryouts scheduled on March 16, 2025. The lifeguard tryouts schedule is as follows: 8:00 a.m. Briefing and review of applications, Approximately 9:00 a.m.1000-yard Ocean Swim, 9:45 a.m. Run-Swim-Run, 12:00 p.m. Announce candidate list for pre-employment scored interview. The selected candidate may be required to go through a background check and a physical examination prior to appointment. For questions regarding this recruitment, please call (562) 570-7198.

Interviews will be taking place March 17th - 21st, 2025. Emails will be sent out to confirm interview times. All candidates are

required to have a working email and phone number. Placement in the physical test will determine who moves forward to the pre-employment scored oral interviews. All candidates will enter the interviews at an equal level. The interview scores will determine who qualifies for the Training Program. Candidates will enter the Training Program after successful completion of all pre-employment forms, live scan, and medical exam. The 9-day, 90-hour Training Program is tentatively scheduled for the following dates: May 17-18, May 24-26, May 31-June 1, & June 7-8. Training days will begin at 8:00 a.m. and include training in ARC Emergency Medical Responder, lifeguard tactics, lifeguard operations, first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, rescue buoys, rescue boards, and timed events. Training will include comprehensive written and practical testing.
