Summary This position performs technical work in support of diagnostic radiology under the direction of a physician. Operates radiology equipment both mobile and fixed and assists the radiologist in fluoroscopic procedures as part of the diagnostic plan for patients. Total-Rewards-of-an-Allied-Health-VA-Career-Brochure.pdf The duties of the Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist include, but are not limited to: Performs a wide variety of general diagnostic radiographic examinations utilizing multiple types of radiographic equipment. Applies knowledge of anatomy and physiology to imaging; determines and applies proper positioning for anatomic region of interest and information desired, according to established guidelines. Assists radiologists in the performance of complex invasive and digital fluoroscopic procedures according established guidelines to ensure safe performance of examinations. Performs radiographic exams at the bedside and in the operating rooms providing diagnostic x-rays to the surgeons and professional staff on patients that are unable to be x-rayed in the Imaging Service due to incapacity or surgical procedures. Performs bone densitometry procedures. These non-invasive procedures will be performed according to established protocols. Knowledgeable to perform basic troubleshooting and adjustments to assess imaging equipment operations. Provides patient education about procedures, give directions, and answering questions, if any. The technologist is knowledgeable of the side effects and adverse reactions associated with contrast administration. Incorporates infection prevention and control practices in accordance with established guidelines. Performs invasive procedures utilizing surgical sterile technique in accordance to hospital policies and applies appropriate PPE when working directly with a sterile field. Practices radiation safety incorporating ALARA principles, in order to reduce exposure to patient, staff and self; applies shielding and lead equivalent PPE. Performs the processes to prepare Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) per CAVHS SOPs specific to each device according to manufacturer's recommendations as required. Accurately performs all documentation and record keeping related to each examination. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, includes rotating weekends and holidays. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). Grade Determinations: GS-09 Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: *Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. *Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. *Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. *Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. *Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions. *Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
