POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds and maintains power equipment, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors and pneumatic tools.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  1. *Operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects;

  2. *Dismantles and reassembles equipment, using hoists and hand tools;

  3. *Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges;

  4. *Replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions;

  5. *Tests overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency;

  6. *Welds broken parts and structural members;

  7. *Fabricates, modifies, and installs special equipment or replacement parts using mills, lathes, welders, torch sets, plasma cutter and metal cutting saws;

  8. May direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and

disassembly of equipment

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

• Minimum of five (5) years of work experience in heavy equipment repair and maintenance environment, and demonstrated ability to properly apply repair and maintenance standards;

• CDL classification of operator’s license preferred for test driving equipment; a Hazmat CDL endorsement may be required;

• Math skills to calculate material usage, complete logs, time sheets, notate mileage, and to accurately use measuring tools, equipment, and devices;

• Ability to follow directions, instructions, structured process and procedures;

• Ability to communicate effectively to provide information, signal others as needed, complete daily records, and to act responsively to inquiries and requests from vendors, customers, management, and to escalate matters appropriately;

• Ability to follow established safety rules applicable to heavy equipment mechanics, to maintain a safe environment, and to adapt and respond to potentially hazardous conditions and use the appropriate PPE;

• Flexibility to adapt to changing work priorities, and to build effective working relationships with shop leadership, staff, customers and others;

• Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving and common sense skills.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma or GED

Technical/other training

CERTIFICATES OR LICENSES REQUIRED:

The following licenses or certificates may be required depending on local, state and/or contract requirements:

Valid Driver's License

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees must have the ability to perform the following physical demands for extended periods of time with or without assistance:

• Maneuvering in and around equipment

• Bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching, crawling

• Pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 35 pounds

• May be required to climb ladders and/or step stools

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed at a customer’s location in office, shop, warehouse, or outdoor environment. May require driving to and from worksite locations. Equipment can be located in crawl spaces, rooftops, and outside facility. Employees may be exposed to hazardous and/or toxic substances, electrical shock, noise from equipment, and depending on external weather conditions, wind, rain, cold, and heat.
