Flexan Principal Automation Systems Engineer in Lincolnshire, Illinois

JOB DESCRIPTION    Provides functional leadership and expertise in automation design, equipment design and fabrication that improves product, process and/or equipment performance.  Supports continuous improvement cycle and drives innovation with a focus on automation, semi automation, fixtures and nests to enable the delivery of new products, improve existing production processes and global process standardization.  Leads team and third-party contractors, integrators and fabricators to design and analyze first generation/next generation processes and equipment in support of existing and new product/technologies used in manufacturing. 

KEY ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads a team of internal or external designers, engineers, and technicians to achieve industrialization objectives of Flexan.

  • Provide hands on leadership while building technical competency and aligning resources to global industrialization and automation needs

  • Work closely with NPD/NPI teams and plant operations to turn equipment and process improvement ideas into reality

  • General understanding of Software for PLC, HMI interfaces, automation integration, mechanisms, equipment fabrication, fixtures and nests.

  • Develop equipment specifications that address the needs of the organization and process

  • Build relationships with network of equipment suppliers, automation suppliers, integrators and fabricators and leverage them to deliver to specifications

  • Lead project teams to create and deliver machine specification and troubleshooting documents to plant organizations

  • Foster and drive equipment standardization across plants and across process areas where possible

  • Responsible for setting technical direction, including vendor selection, as well as managing project forecast and spend for automation, semi-automation and equipment fabrication

  • Provide hands on leadership for design, installation and debug of equipment required for next generation manufacturing

  • Designs and/or specifies new equipment or modifies existing equipment to continuously improve process performance and safety

  • Continually look for opportunities to automate processes and equipment globally

  • Responsible for driving both cost and schedule updates on assigned projects

  • Work with vendors and subject matter experts to deliver new equipment innovations and world class capabilities

  • Mentors team members on designing new equipment, fixtures, or systems using SolidWorks software

  • Implements permanent solutions to long term performance issues and improves existing and incorporates new technologies

  • Meets all Environmental, Safety and Health requirements

  • Other activities associated with automation and equipment as they become evident

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience working in Medical Device Manufacturing industry preferred 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM field, plus a minimum of 12 years related experience, including leading technical project teams

  • Proven Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

  • Demonstrated time management skills; ability to handle multiple tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines

  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 application and advanced knowledge of CAD & 3D modeling software

  • Demonstrated, strong communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate well with peers and cross-functional teams and external customers

    Physical Demands:

  • Occasional lifting to 50 lbs.

    Work Environment:

  • 20% travel may be required

  • 100% onsite
