Job Summary

The Construction Manager oversees the construction team and is responsible for planning, scheduling coordinating field construction inspection and contract administration activities on assigned road, bridge, construction projects. Must maintain positive working relationships with project engineers, contractors, subconsultants, owner agencies, the public, other JEO managers and staff, and DOT or FHWA staff, as applicable. Must adhere to quality assurance and safety standards and ensure that schedules and budgets are met. Provides inspection of construction activities in order to ensure the quality of construction and compliance with project plans, contracts, specifications, and special provisions.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Serve as a construction project manager for a variety of projects by monitoring and overseeing the team who does onsite inspection of the construction of roads, highways and bridges, and reviewing work to assure contract compliance and quality of materials and workmanship, and safe worksite operations.

  • Review, inspect, test and measure the work, or supervise others performing those duties, to ensure that work is performed in accordance with design requirements.

  • Maintain accurate daily records of construction site activities and produce required reports on the status of progress, safety, quality, schedule and budgets.

  • Analyze and/or perform scheduling utilizing standard scheduling software such as Deltek Vision or equivalent.

  • Initiate communication of project-related details to the project manager and client whenever necessary.

  • Calculate and/or estimate quantities for project work that is performed and recommend authorization of payments for completed and accepted work. Document these estimates or calculations.

  • Assist in documenting construction changes by developing contract change orders and cost estimates.

  • Maintain assigned equipment and vehicles according to company policies and procedures.

    Qualifications and Skills

  • Degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering.

  • 5+ years’ experience in construction management of a variety of projects such as road, bridges, required.

  • Working knowledge of general design principles, safety and labor laws and requirements, quality control and quality assurance principles

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines and maintain attention to accuracy and detail.

  • Ability to manage a staff of professionals and direct their efficient utilization on projects.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications for position.

  • Must meet internal requirements for operation of company vehicles throughout duration of employment and must maintain a valid driver's license and insurable driving record.

  • Willing and able to travel to job sites, sometimes for extended periods. Job sites may be located throughout Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous project management and/or inspection experience on DOT or FHWA road construction preferred but not required.

  • Current Professional Engineer license desirable

  • Construction materials testing experience preferred.
