Overview

Saint Joseph East is a 217-bed full-service community hospital located in the rapidly growing southeastern section of Lexington Kentucky. We provide care for patients in Fayette and surrounding counties. At Saint Joseph East ambulatory surgery 24-hour emergency care and women’s health services are supported through a vast array of inpatient and outpatient program. Additional specialty services include Heart Care Breast Care Sleep Care and Weight Loss Surgery. As our surgical services lead nurse at CHI Saint Jospeh East, you will prepare patients for surgical procedures and assist in the operating room to ensure they receive excellent nursing when they are at their most vulnerable. Participates in maintaining staff competencies through education, mentoring and role modeling. Supports the Nurse Manager in interviewing and hiring employees; training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and mentoring/coaching employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Every day you will go over consent forms, answer questions about the procedure, do preoperative assessments, make sure the equipment is ready to go, and update family members on the surgery status during the operation. You will be expected to directly assist the surgeon during the actual surgery.

To be successful in this role you must have the ability to maintain focus while multitasking, remain calm under pressure, and exercise good judgment in emergency situations.

Responsibilities

The major focus of this position is to plan, provide and supervise care for the surgical patients, supporting the service line team. Primary customers include the staff, physicians, patients/families and other members of the health care team. As a member of the leadership team, monitors and maintains clinical standards of care; maintains accountability for assurance of appropriate staffing resources and provision of quality, evidence based patient care. Acts as and represents Unit leadership when the Nurse Manager is unavailable. Demonstrates knowledge of and delivers care in accordance with the Kentucky Nurse Practice Act. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team. Participates in maintaining staff competencies through education, mentoring and role modeling. Supports the Nurse Manager in interviewing and hiring employees; training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and mentoring/coaching employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Plans and provides direct patient care as well as supervision of personnel practicing in surgical service areas. Makes patient care assignments and facilitates patient throughout and directly observes staff performances.

  2. Proactively matches existing resources seeking ways to provide patient care that supports staff and maintains a therapeutic environment, collaborative, team environment.

  3. Assures that staffing and resources are aligned with patient care needs.

  4. Communicates personnel related concerns to Nurse Manager.

  5. Identifies opportunities for improvement and implements appropriate change using logical problem solving skills.

  6. Maintains Unit Professional standards.

  7. Maintains confidentiality of department information.

  8. Contributes to the efficient overall operation of the department focusing on timely starts for surgical cases, improving turnover times and accurately anticipating needs of each procedure.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

New hire RN’s have 2 years from hire date to enroll in BSN program and it must be completed within 5 years of hire.

Required Licensure and Certifications

Current RN license in the state of Kentucky.

BLS within 5 days of employment

ACLS within 3 months of employment

PALS within 6 months of employment

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training

2 years of perioperative nursing experience. Must have ability to read, analyze and interpret common and industry-related documents. Must have the ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from patients, families, CHI Saint Joseph Health staff and the general public. Must have ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Must have the ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions and deliver successful results. Must have working knowledge Microsoft Office products. Must have the capacity to learn other relevant systems and databases, as needed.

Pay Range

$31.50 - $45.68 /hour
