Stantec Geologist in LEXINGTON, Kentucky

Geologist - ( 2400036E )

Description

Some of the world’s top engineers and scientists come together in our Water business because they view a community’s interaction with water a bit differently—as a single holistic system, rather than unconnected networks divided by jurisdictional boundaries. Working throughout the hydrologic cycle, we are delivering sustainable solutions to make sure water is where it should be and available when needed. Our experts guide our work with scientific rigor, an innovative spirit, and a vision for growth. Every day, we help communities improve, reuse, and protect this precious resource for future generations. By 2025 we are hiring 2,000 people (like you) to join our team. Grow with us, H2O+U.

Your Opportunity

Stantec is currently seeking to add a Project Geologist to our Water team. The successful candidate will be supporting complex geotechnical and geological investigations that deliver community-based solutions. This position will largely focus on and be involved with Abandoned Mine Lands projects (AML). While focused on AML projects, the successful candidate will also be supporting other disciplines and practices with the Water unit. Typical assignments covering both AML and other supporting work include geotechnical and geological assessments, hydrogeological studies, and subsurface investigations; sampling of soil, sediment, rock, surface water, and groundwater; data interpretation/evaluation, logistical planning, project tracking, process QA/QC, and technical reporting.

Your Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will:

  • Investigate and define complex interactions between historic underground mines, surficial developments, and restorative, remedial techniques.

  • Investigate, define, and present geochemical relationships between in-situ geologic and hydrogeologic conditions and materials used to remediate surficial subsidence.

  • Oversee advancement of soil and rock borings, including installation of groundwater monitoring wells as well as hydrologic and geotechnical monitoring instrumentation.

  • Conduct field inspections and assessments of geohazards, such as landslides, rockfall, subsidence, acid mine drainage, highwalls, seeps, and abandoned mining features.

  • Plan site health and safety documentation and completing work safely.

  • Coordinate and assist with scheduling field investigations and tracking project progress.

  • Learn and follow standard operating procedures for work assigned.

  • Conduct fieldwork, including overnight travel, and regional or national travel, when necessary. Individuals can expect field project schedules of 5-day weeks, Monday through Friday.

  • Demonstrate ability to analyze and summarize field data, scientific publications, and technical data.

  • Draft technical reports, including data interpretation and compilation, to meet client and industry requirements.

  • Collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary project teams of scientists, engineers, chemists, hydrogeologists, GIS-technicians, and field personnel to achieve project goals.

  • Assist and mentor junior staff in technical and consulting excellence.

  • Assure the quality of all work and product deliverables and achievement of project objectives.

  • Complete applicable company and client required health & safety training (including OSHA required training) and follow health & safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A current Professional Geologist license, or the ability to immediately apply for licensure required.

  • The ability to effectively communicate project status to project managers and appropriate staff.

  • A working knowledge of field methods, structural geology, hydrogeology, and coal geology. Experience in or an understanding of regional coal mining methods is advantageous.

  • Strong scientific/technical writing skills.

  • The ability to work independently or as part of a team.

  • Strong analytical skills, and attention to detail with the ability to recognize discrepancies.

  • The initiative to conceptualize broad reaches of data and the ability to interpret where data leads.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with both clients and project team members.

  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office productivity software.

  • A valid driver's license and safe driving record.

  • The ability and willingness to travel regionally, but mostly in Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, and West Virginia, as required for project needs up to 25 percent of time. Individuals can expect to travel 5 days per week, Monday through Friday.

  • The ability to pass a pre-employment physical and drug and alcohol screening.

  • The ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 pounds.

  • The ability to work outdoors in a physically active environment and in adverse weather conditions.

  • The awareness and initiative to advocate for personal and team health and safety, as well as that of the clients.

  • A working knowledge of field geotechnical and geological sampling techniques.

Education and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’ degree in geology or related field.

  • 5-8 years of geotechnical consulting or coal mining geology experience.
